EQDefaultCurves.xml should be in the package or zip at /Audacity/Audacity.app/Contents/Resources/EQDefaultCurves.xml . EQDefaultCurves.xml provides the nine default preset curves for Equalization and an initial flat "unnamed" curve.
If you obtained the .dmg of Audacity it should be installed thus:
1 Double-click the downloaded .dmg to mount it
2 Then to install Audacity, copy the "Audacity" folder from the newly mounted .dmg to /Applications or any other location of your choosing
3 Then run Audacity from the folder you copied it to.
Whenever you open Equalization and click OK, EQCurves.xml will be written to ~/Library/Application Support/audacity. EQCurves.xml will represent the curve points of the current "unnamed" curve and of all the preset curves including any presets you added. If you click OK in Equalization without changing any curves, EQCurves.xml will just be a backup copy of EQDefaultCurves.xml.
See
http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Equalization .
If that does not help, please explain in more detail what you trying to do.

"EQDefaultCurves.xml should be in the package or zip at /Audacity/Audacity.app/Contents/Resources/EQDefaultCurves.xml"
--i just see the app, named Audacity. it's not actually called Audacity.app apparently. i can't see a folder called contents.
Nor is audacity in Library/application support. Annoying: it always was there when i was running mac 10.6!!
the reason i want to get at the eqcurves.xml file is that when i was using 10.6, i was modifying it using a text editor to create complex eq curves.
thanks for considering.

Right-click on the Audacity application. Choose "Show package contents" - a new window opens. It has a folder called "Contents" - open that folder. It has a folder called "Resources" - "EQDefaultCurves.xml" is in that folder.
Which "Library/Application Support" are you looking at? The one at root level or the one in your user space?

Did you save any of the complex curves as presets? If so and you can see them, then Audacity is reading the EQCurves.xml file OK.
Also if in the Audacity Equalization effect you click "Save / Manage Curves..." then "Export", the window should open at ~/Library/Application Support/audacity and show you EQCurves.XML.

I now see that audacity has put eqcurves.xml into user/library, not root/library. it's never done that before; oh well. To further confuse things, user/library is invisible!! i got it to become visible within a "save as" dialog box by doing <shift><command><.>
thanks very much for your help, guys.

Nice trick!
<user>/Library became invisible with 10.7. Not one of Apple's best decisions IMO.

I know they were threatening to, but did not realise they had done it. Other workarounds (including a permanent one) to show ~/Library here:
http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/22/access-u ... os-x-lion/
So this means that audacity.cfg is also now hidden on Lion.
I also see Lion now hides /lost+found to make it easier to "lose".
If you export an Audacity EQ curve on Lion, where does the window open to?
