Inserting Tracks

I have a few questions (2) and please accept my apologies if this is not the correct link that I should be using. Im trying to figure out how to insert tracks or add separate tracks to a long mix (mp3 file) that I recorded. Is that possible to do with audacity?

Also, which version of audacity should I be using? I have a MacBook Pro OS X 10.6.8? Just wanted to make sure Im using the correct one.

It's like copy and paste in a word-processor: select the part of the long mix, press "Ctrl"+"C" to copy it, then press "Ctrl"+"V" to paste it into a new track.

See "Tracks", "add new", "stereo track" to create an empty stereo track to paste a copy into.

I figured out which link I should be using but was not able to install Audacity or the Lame Encoder on my Mac. Was on the phone with apple tech (they are really clueless sometimes) and could not copy or move the files to my application folder. Does anyone know if this is possible with OS X 10.6.8?

Went to plan B - Using my back up dell. I was able to install audacity but not the lame encoder. So I used the zip file and it worked fine. But was still not able to insert tracks. Has anyone else had the same problem with the MacbookPro - Quad Core OS X 10.6.8, or can explain what the problem might be. Also, need to know how to insert the tracks. The video's show the files being saved as wav files, so I know those are old. Thanks a lot !!!!!!

There is an Mac OS section in the Audacity forum, e.g. ...

Audacity can't download files from the internet, only import them. If the files you want to import are AAC files they should import if they are not old rights-restricted M4P files from iTunes store. For importing other formats you may need to install FFmpeg.

If the tracks are in apple aiff format you may have to install the FFmpeg libraries to play them on Audacity.
Audacity is able to play (open) MP3 tracks without LAME or FFMpeg installed, but it can only save tracks in the MP3 format if LAME is installed.

Trevor, Thanks for the response. Just wanted to clarify. I can't install audacity to my application folder. When I try to install it to my applications folder, the message says" Application folder can not be modified". Thanks

If the files you want to import are AAC files they should import if they are not old rights-restricted M4P files from iTunes store.

They will import into the Beta version of Audacity for Mac (currently v1.3.13 here):

but not into Audacity 1.2. 1.3.13 is the correct version for OS X 10.6.8.

Assuming you have also installed 1.3.13 on Windows then in that version you will need FFmpeg to import AAC files.

If the tracks are in apple aiff format you may have to install the FFmpeg libraries to play them on Audacity.

Just to clarify, Audacity does not need FFmpeg to import AIFF on any operating system:
