Creating a new time each time I hit "record"

I'm trying to record in Audacity, but every time I hit the record button it creates a new track right under the last instead of just continuing on the same track and creating a new clip. Any help? I'm on 10.4.11. Thank you very much.

This is normal behaviour when hitting the record button. Try the "Append Record" command.

That worked. Thank you very much. How do apply an equalizer to just one track? Also I can't seem to find a master volume. There's one in the bar up top but it doesn't change the volume for me. Thank you.

Select the track, or the part of the track that you want to apply the effect to, then apply the effect.

There is no "master mix volume" in Audacity. The playback volume control in the Mixer Toolbar
http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Mixer_Toolbar is actually a "monitor volume" control - turning it down will not prevent clipping when mixing tracks. If you need to turn down the entire mix to avoid clipping, select all tracks than apply Effect > Amplify with a negative value for "Amplifictaion (dB)".
