Disguising voice

Post by md4peace » Wed Aug 03, 2011 6:53 pm

I want to record an interview where I play both roles. I want to alter my voice for one of them (the interviewee) to sound like the alternate gender (female) but also to make it have enough other differences besides just pitch so that it doesn't just sound like me at a higher pitch. What steps would be best to accomplish this?

It's not a question of technology, it's all about acting.

That's a very popular Feature Request. We can't do it, but it's popular to ask for it.

And yes, I once played both male and female parts by getting up close to the microphone to do the breathy female voice.

One of the producers asked me who I got to do the woman's part.

Thanks. Thought it was worth a try. Even with better acting I think my voice would retain enough of the characteristics to sound similar. I'll have to try a different approach.

Changing the speed a little can help when used in addition to the best of your acting skills. Too much and your voice will turn 'toone.

A different approach - Do you have a friend to help you out?

Perhaps I could write the script and have one of Apple's new voices read it. Can I record that into Audacity? These are usually brief scenarios that I might do on the spur of the moment or at hours when I am free from other obligations.

No friends?

You can use SoundFlower software to record anything playing on your mac. I have licenses for WireTap Studio which is a much more serious recorder with timers and show management (but I no longer recommend it). Audio Hijack is another one.

I don't recommend SoundFlower, either. It works and it's free but confusing.

If your voice is that distinctive, then you could be a presenter. You don't have to sound like Don Lafontaine.

We wrote a thing on SoundFlower that I can't find.

I think that maybe playing around with equalization graph might do enough for this to work. I just want to change the amount of nasal quality that there is to my voice. (I do have Wire Tap Studio, SoundFlower and Audio Hijack in my pile of applications but haven't tried them out in a while - I like the ease of recording in Audacity for multiple uses.)
