Volume wont play through from mixer/turntables

I have a basic Numark M1 mixer with usb connection and two NDX400 cdjs

I have all of the connections set up and I know that Audacity is receiving signal from my turntable due to the mixer toolbar, but I cannot hear anything I play off my turntable. I have software playthrough enabled. I can even play music off of my laptop off iTunes and YouTube without disconnecting my iConnex soundcard.

Any ideas?? Thanks!

Software playthrough may not work on Macs - try LineIn.

If you are on OS X 10.6 you will probably get a much better overall experience with Audacity Beta.

The beta seems to be working much better. Thanks!

I've tried everything, including downloading Linein and using the Audacity Beta 1.3.13. Preferences in Finder logged to CODEC. Still no playback sound. Any other ideas?

You jumped into someone else's thread. Do you have a basic Numark M1 mixer with usb connection and two NDX400 cdjs like the original poster? If not, please tell us what device you are trying to record from. Also tell us if the only problem is that you cannot hear what you are recording, or if you also can't hear the recording when you try to play it after you have finished recording.

Also please tell us what input and output devices are listed in Audacity Device Toolbar.

Sorry about jumping in on the wrong thread, Gale. I've been searching for tech assistance on this problem for over a week and nothing has remedied the problem. I have downloaded Audacity 1.3.13, LAME 3.98.2 encoder, and the latest version of Linein. I have a Numark TT1 USB turntable, going into a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). I cannot hear playthrough at either recording or playback.
I have adjusted the Finder Preferences to accommodate CODEC, and similarly with the Audacity Preferences.

OK :) But you can see why it's actually better to start a new thread.

"Playthrough" means strictly only playback of a recording.

Set the Audacity project rate bottom left to 44100 Hz. In the Audacity Device Toolbar, set the output to built-in audio and the input to USB Audio Codec (or whatever the TT1 is called), and set recording channels to 2 (stereo). Do Generate > Tone in Audacity and play that tone to test playback.

If you can't hear any playback in Audacity, try Transport > Rescan Audio Devices. If you still can't hear playback, click Applications > Audio MIDI Setup from Finder. Click the Audio Devices tab and make sure on the left-hand (input) side that USB Codec is selected in the "Default Input" and "Properties For" boxes. On the output side, make sure built-in audio is selected in the "Default Output" and "System Output " boxes. Set both "Format" sections (in input and output) to 44100 Hz 2ch-16 bit.

Do Rescan Audio Devices again in Audacity and you really should be able to hear the tone and anything you have hitherto recorded. Obviously if your Numark recording is a flat line at 0.0, then you have only recorded silence so far.

Now assuming you can record the Numark, try Transport > Software Playthrough in Audacity to hear the turntable while you are recording it. If you can't hear it, open Linein by Rogue Amoeba. Set "Input from" to the same USB Audio Codec. Set "Output to" to built-in audio. Click "Pass Thru".

Note I'm not on a Mac. If the above does not work then someone on Mac will have to help you.

Gale-

Fantastic. I have done many of these steps that you recommend already but I will follow your advice. I sincerely appreciate the help.

We know how the turntable/mixer is getting into your Mac -- through the USB port. How are you listening?

Which Mac is also important. Do you have analog jacks for Line-In and Line-Out like this? Not all Macs do.

Are you listening on USB Headphones?
