I saw a similar problem but it was related to a hiss. In my case, when I start Audacity, or hit Record (if started before) the volume of the music playback itself spikes. It seems like the record volume itself remains low, but playback is cranked to the point of being unbearable.
I am using an M-Audio Firewire 1814 generally trying to record a DJ set with either Traktor pro (DN HC 4500 Midi controller/soundcard) and turntables. The issue occurs with either source.
I had an m-audio fast track pro before and didn't experience this problem, but I might have been on Audacity 1.2 before. I am currently using 1.3.12.

Re: Volume Spikes on Record
Traktor Pro has its own recording feature. You should use that when recording from Traktor Pro.

Re: Volume Spikes on Record
Fair enough, but I don't only record within traktor and the external routing is single source at a time (so when I have 2 TTs and the 2 channels of the midi controller I can't route them all).
Re: Volume Spikes on Record
I think we need to break the problem down.
Let's take a simple case -
Connect a single, known to be good, audio device (for example a CD player) to the Mac's inbuilt Line-In connector.
Are you able to record correctly?
