Maybe I can borrow a pitchfork and a flaming torch from the next door neighbor. She's a Hollywood set decorator and likely to have such things.
I needed the noise reduction tools only available in Audacity 1.3, so I pulled 1.3.5b down and installed it on my OS-X 10.4.11 12" PowerBook G4. I've been messing with it on and off all day and I decided to clear the decks and work on something else.
[Quit Audacity] is gray. The process really isn't there any more because Apple-Q fails, too. The program is clearly running because I can apply filters to my 18-1/2 second live capture sound clip and they work. My Audacity 1.2.6 is not running and hasn't been since I started 1.3.
I can see Audacity running in Terminal-Top and I can kill it from the command line, but really, that's not very graceful, is it?

Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Re: It Will Not Die!!
I have two grays, "Services" and "Quit Audacity."
The program is working perfectly. Play, Play At Speed, Stop, Magnify, Edit, and the filters all seem to work.
Terminal-Top tells me that there is only one Audacity process running.
I may have another oddity. I tried exporting a selection to WAV and the tag dialog came up. Correct me, but WAV format doesn't support tags. I don't have lame installed, so I'm not expecting MP3 to work.
This is getting seriously Alfred Hitchcock.

I think I know the spell--or a spell.
Close the program with the little red ball upper left of the work window. Then Audacity > Close Audacity becomes active.
Holdover Windows code?

Eek!
That combination of symptoms almost starts to sound like it's taken on daemon attributes, and tried to divorce itself from the control terminal.... For a gui-based app, that's very Hitchcock-like indeed!
Sounds like I might want to peruse the source code I took the trouble to download....
And you're right, WAV doesn't support tags (markers); which is one of the plethora of reasons I tend to save stereo mixes in AIFF, which does.

<<<I tend to save stereo mixes in AIFF>>>
Thus assuring that none of the Windows machines will be able to open them. That's the down side. AIFF is lovely, but it only opens on 12% of computers out there.
<<<it's taken on daemon attributes>>>
I wonder how many other people have this problem. It's pretty serious and was a show-stopper until I stumbled on the work-around.

Re: It Will Not Die!!
Koz, can you try our latest build:
http://www.audacity.homerow.net/index.p ... alpha_.dmg
If the Quit Audacity command is still greyed let me know and I'll escalate it. Where is the Services menu item, under "Audacity"? That must be a Mac-specific menu, what does it do?
WAV format does support LIST INFO tags in the RIFF chunk:
http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exi ... .html#Info
and 1.3.5 supports these:
Artist (IART)
Title (INAM)
Year (Date Created) (ICRD)
Comments (ICMT)
Copyright (ICOP)
Software (ISFT)

Alpha Code! Ewwwwwwwww!
This from the person who wouldn't run 1.3 forever.
Not at work. This will have to wait until I get home.
