Can't open .wav files
1.3.5 starts to open a wav file:
Minor identity problem: the progress window says it is importing an MP3 file.
Major operation issue: 2-3 seconds into the import, the entire app quits.
I can't open a wav in any fashion: can't drop onto the app, can't open a file after browsing to it, nothing.
MP3 is not a problem.
The Winduhs version doesn't have any problem opening wav.

Re: Can't open .wav files
Cick on the mystery file and Open With > QuickTime Player Once in QuickTime, Press Apple-I and see what the INFO panel says. I bet the files aren't "straight" WAV files.

Re: Can't open .wav files
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 44.100 kHz.
This file (and others) is as exported from Audacity 1.2.6. It is the same format as the original file recorded with my Zoom H4, which I imported into Audacity 1.2.6, edited, and exported.
1.3.5 will not open a wav file fresh from the Zoom, nor will it open one exported from 1.2.6.

Just for grins, download the pinao trill from here and see if that plays...

It's a six second piece.

Re: Can't open .wav files
For the sake of orientation, I received a file named piano2.wav. Getting info from within Quicktime Player says it is 16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 48.000 kHz. (as compared to the 44.100 kHz of the files I have been using).kozikowski wrote:Just for grins, download the pinao trill from here and see if that plays...

1.3.5 gives me this error:
"Audacity had to make a guess at the type of file. The audio may be bogus. If the audio is bogus, try renaming the file so that it has the correct extension before opening it."
Clicking through the error, the result is less than a second long, sounding more like an R2D2 squigglebeep than anything else.
1.2.6 opens and plays it perfectly.
We need LAME to export MP3. Do we need something extra to import WAV?

Re: Can't open .wav files
Ah. That's what I thought. Your 1.3.5 may be seriously damaged.
Next step is trashing the Audacity preferences.
============================
Trash Mac Audacity Preferences
/SystemDrive/Users/Me/Library/Preferences/audacity Preferences
============================
I don't know how they do it when you have both Audacities on your machine. You'll have to dig down and look. If that doesn't fix it, trash the application folder (or however you installed it), download the program again fresh, explode it, and reinstall it.
All my Audacity production goes through 1.2.6 on my G4 laptop or 1.2.5 on my Intel Mini. Everyone keeps trying to get me on the 1.3.x bandwagon, but I've resisted so far partly because of scary problems like this. Do write back and comment what you find when you look for the preference files. Technically, there should be two, but there doesn't have to be.
Version 1.3.[some small number] was actually doing OK until the push for stable 1.4 at the same time that Vista and Leopard joined the circus. It's been most amusing so far.

Re: Can't open .wav files
Trashing the prefs (there was only one) doesn't change anything.
Still gets the "bogus audio" error, file as opened is still just a couple of squeaks.
As with you, I am actually OK with 1.2.6, though having the latest is always nice/fun. I'll live. I can use 1.3.5 on my Winduhs laptop if absolutely necessary.
Here's hoping someone from the team reads these things, because my efforts to send a bug report to more than one of the list addresses just get returned: I am confirmed with the lists, but their server apparently doesn't like the addresses.

Re: Can't open .wav files
You don't actually get clean preferences with 1.3.5 just by deleting the configuration file. Thye reason is that if you also have 1.2.x installed and set preferences in it - then 1.3.5 takes its initial preferences from that 1.2 configuration file (I believe the developers chose to do that partly so you don't have to go grubbing around for LAME all over again when you install 1.3.5)

Re: Can't open .wav files
Koz suggested I trash the prefs file. I don't see a configuration file, unless you're using two different terms for the same thing.waxcylinder wrote:You don't actually get clean preferences with 1.3.5 just by deleting the configuration file.
At any rate, if one trashes the file and 1.3.5 is then opened, there is nothing left over from 1.2.6 to look at. You get a new file.

Re: Can't open .wav files
Matt,
sorry for the confusion - yes they are the same thing - the preferences are stored in a .cfg (i.e. configuration) file in Windows - not sure about MAC.
At least you MAC guys are lucky - you've always had a separate configuration/prerferences file, I believe. Us poor Widows users had our 1.2 preferences stored in the Windows registry - a place of very dark magic that requires Lord Voldermort himself...
