Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

1.3.3 Interaction of record levels & Sys Prefs sound i/p

Post by 12_tone_lizzie » Tue May 13, 2008 11:23 am

I use OS X 10.3.9. I was happily using Aud 1.2.6 to digitize vinyl LPs. In System Prefs I had the Sound input level set to about 75% of maximum, and for most LPs a recording level of between 0.6 and 0.8 gave good unclipped results. Then I thought I'd try Aud 1.3.3, and I now have 2 problems:

1. Setting a good record level is now confusing and weird. The Audacity record level and Sound input level in System Prefs interact in ways I don't understand. Sometimes, with the visual vertical axis of the Aud window set to ±1, as I've always had it, the waveforms are clipped but not at top and bottom of the window – they're cut off visually at about ±0.75, with blank space above and below. And something seems to keep setting the Aud recording level sliders to max. Sorry to be vague, but it's confusing.

2. Because of the above, I just want to go back to 1.2.6, but it won't work any more. Do I have to uninstall 1.3.3.? How do I do that?

All suggestions gratefully received.

Something serious may have happened. You can install both 1.2 and 1.3 on your machine and as long as you don't open both at once, you should be good to go.

Do you know how to trash the preferences? Drag the preference files to the trash and restart Audacity. The program(s) should restart at first birthday, which means you'll need to go through and change it from mono to stereo, etc. All the preconceived notions will vanish. So no, you don't have to download it again unless you want to.

=================================
Trash Mac Audacity Preferences
/SystemDrive/Users/Me/Library/Preferences/audacity Preferences
Windows Preferences are burned into the Registry. Abandon Hope Ye Who Enter...

Are you running out of disk space? INFO your system disk. You should have at least 10% free space left and that's a minimum.
