silences shrinking on cut and paste

Post by dannykauf » Mon Oct 04, 2010 11:19 am

So I've been working on a podcast that I recorded and mixed over several different audacity files. When it came time to string them all together I made a new file with empty tracks, but as I cut and pasted the various chapters in I'd find the silent lines in various tracks shrinking so that they were out of sync and i'd have to re-arrange them. couldn't see any pattern to it. some tracks stayed in sync. some didn't.
any ideas?

also a suggestion: how about a sliding volume shift option?

thanks to sourceforge for a great product!

<<<I recorded and mixed over several different audacity files.>>>

Literally several different AUP Projects? I don't think I personally would have done it that way. I would have exported WAV files of each segment and each one at exactly the same music technical standard. Those should cut together perfectly in any order. Trying to mix Projects may run into problems if each mini-show is technically a little different. Music from video is 48000, 16-bit, Stereo and music from CD is 44100, 16-bit, Stereo. That could get a lot worse if you also mixed in MP3 and other compressed formats.

Audacity is not a terribly good converter.

Audacity has an envelope tool. Two white arrows and bent blue line. Apply that and you can change volume by dragging the control lines around, note by note if you need that. The control lines are rubber bands.

Without seeing pictures of the various projects that the audio was sourced from, I'd speculate that the "shrinking silences" would relate to tracks where the audio did not start at time=0. When you cut and paste, Audacity will paste at the cursor position, so that will affect things as well.

In order to help you we really need more details. Did you cut and paste each track one at a time, or cut and paste multiple tracks simultaneously? Did some of the tracks have multiple clips? If so, did you cut and paste those clips individually, or all clips from one track all at once? Things like that - they'll all affect what happens.

One way to possibly deal with this issue is to do a "Mix and Render" of each track, thus freezing that positions of all audio on each track in the timeline, since the mixed track will contain audio from time=0 to the end of the track. You will lose the individual clips on that track - that's the trade-off.
