I am trying to download Lame_Library_v3.98.2 so I can export mp3 files. I download it and install it and everything, but then audacity cannot locate it and it doesn't even appear anywhere on my computer! I have a Mac OS 10.6.3, but I don't know which version of audacity I am running... I can't find that info anywhere. Please help, someone!!!

To find which Audacity you are running click on Audacity > About Audacity. If you are running 1.2.x, please immediately upgrade to 1.3.12 here:

Audacity 1.2.x does not play well with OS X 10.6.

Did you go to this page: http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/ and download "Lame_Library_v3.98.2_for_Audacity_on_OSX.dmg"? This is the version of LAME for Audacity 1.3.3 and later on OS X.

A .dmg file should be downloaded and automatically mount in the Finder. Inside the dmg is "Lame Library v3.98.2 for Audacity.pkg". When you double-click the .pkg file the standard OS X installer should run. This should install the file "libmp3lame.dylib" in /usr/local/lib/audacity. To get to that location you'll have to click on Go > Go to folder ... (in the Finder) and enter that location in the dialog.

Once lamelib is installed in this location Audacity should find it automatically. In Audacity, click on Audacity > Preferences then go to the Libraries section. In the "MP3 Export Library" pane it should show the version number of LAME currently installed. If that does not show up, click the "Locate" button and enter "/usr/local/lib/audacity/libmp3lame.dylib" in the resulting dialog.

I was having the same problem as you with OS 10.6.3 there is no way to load the .dmg file into the correct /usr/ folder. When you run the installer it says that it installed it successfully but the file simply disappears. I checked the contents of the folder from Terminal and it is not there. Here's what I did to get it working:

look for a link for "libmp3lame-osx-universal-3.97.zip"

Download the .zip file (even though it says that it's for an earlier OS version).

Double click to unzip it.

In the folder that opens up, open the folders package -> usr -> local -> lib -> libmp3lame.dylib

Move the libmp3lame.dylib file to any place on your computer (the desktop is convenient)

Now when you do an export and go through the dylib installation process you can browse for it and direct the installer to the right location (e.g., desktop) and it will find it and install it where it needs to be.

After installing it, to be sure quit Audacity and restart it. Now you should be able to use the mp3 export feature. Simple as that.

I don't know why the .dmg file installation does not work but you can pretty much forget all the instructions in the installation page because for 10.6.3 it does not work.

I hope that helps, and if it did I've done my good deed for the day and payed back for the application with a little Beta trial feedback.
