Hello. After months of predictable use, I got this when I tried to recover an album I had just recorded. It failed before I could name the file and, when I try to recover it, I get this error. Anyone else encountered this?
Thanks
PS: I have OS X on a mac G4, Audacity 1.3.2 beta

Hello,
I'm using audacity 1.3.3 but I just encountered the same problem with the same error. The data is fairly important and unfortunately nothing that I can recreate easily. So it would be greatly appreciated if you found a solution and could send this to me.
thanks in advance.

Are you opening up an Audacity Project? my_cool_music.aup?
Projects are brittle and easily damaged. Since a project isn't a real sound file, it depends for its existence on a bunch of other sound files and capture clips. If you like to clean up after yourself, it's possible that you accidentally destroyed some of the components of the show.
Next time you get a show on the timeline that plays correctly, Export As WAV rather than Save A Project. A WAV file is a self-contained, stand-alone sound file that's really hard to damage.

Oh, and in the case of Instant Capture Death, Select your hard drive and press Apple-I for an INFO panel. No drive on a music (or video) machine should be over 90% full.

Hey Koz,
thanks for the quick answer.
But no, I'm not opening a project. The situation was as followed: I did an interview with a former co-worker of mine and after about an hour the program simply shut down. After reopening it, it says that there is a file that can be recovered and shows me its name and time stamp. If I click on the file and choose "recover" it shows the Error-Line shown in the headline.
Also: I still have about 40 GB on my hard drive, that's about 40%.
Since someone else already encountered the problem I was hopeful that there was a solution to it or a hint that might just show me the correct name of the temporary data to help me recover the lost data. Otherwise I have to hope that I'll find an interview spot again, which is very difficult (and I don't really want to switch to garage band any longer than necessary).

When Audacity takes a dive, it produces unrecoverable garbage.
But here's the disaster recovery process.
Crash Recovery

I'm more interested in why it died. I do extended recordings, but I do it in 1.2.6, the stable version of Audacity. Is this your first recording that long? Are you trying to use 24-bit sound. Macs tend to not like that for some reason.

I'm using Audacity 1.3.3 beta on Ubuntu 7.10. I've managed previously to record up to around 13.5 hours of stereo @ 44.1KHz (the maximum I'm still able to apparently but that's another issue) and today I started a new recording and it bombed sometime while I was out the room but probably around 5 hours of recording judging from the space used on the disk by the au files. I have Audacity configured to store everything on an external usb2 EXT3 formatted volume with over 100Gb of free space. On restarting Audicity I'm prompted about the autorecovery then I also get this error message when selecting "yes" and none of my data is available through the program now

. Its a shame and I'll have to muck around with the various manual recovery options. If I had a spare faster disk I'd use that but I don't thing the writing is an issue as I don't see any delays during recording. I've also taken a look at the project file and it looks like valid xml to me.

<<<I'm using Audacity 1.3.3 beta on Ubuntu 7.10.>>>
So you accidentally posted this in the Mac forum? Really, we're not going to know, either.
I regularly do long (2-hour) recordings on a Red Hat machine and that seems to work.

It is not really recommended to record onto an external drive - one slight blip in the data transfer and the whole project can turn to dust. OK to use an external drive for backup, but take care if you are moving projects around (see here for details;
