Hi. We currently use Protools but want to set up an another studio, using audacity (it's cheaper!) Protools has the ability to edit and restore a track by simply clicking on the track and dragging. Does audacity have this function?

While Audacity can do many of the things that ProTools can do (and some things that ProTools cannot do), Audacity works in a significantly different way to ProTool. The main difference is that ProTools references the audio data and applies edits and effects to it on the fly, whereas for most functions Audacity directly applies the effect to the data. So for example, if you trim a bit off the end of a track in ProTools, it does not actually "edit" the audio, it just sets a marker that tells ProTools to stop playing the audio when it reaches that marker (the "marker" being the end of the track as displayed in the track view). In contrast, if you trim the end off a track in Audacity, it does edit the audio data and reduces the length.

Both approaches have advantages (and disadvantages). Probably the best way to understand the differences is to have a play with Audacity for a while - perhaps work through a couple of Tutorials.

I would highly recommend using Audacity 1.3.12 rather than the old 1.2.6 version.

In slightly different English words, Audacity Projects do not save UNDO. That's a feature request, typically from people who have gotten burned.

Here it is the next day, we turned the computer on and now we need to UNDO the last edit.

Sorry. I hope you saved all your original sound files. That's another common mistake. People record the new edit over the old files. They shot MyMusic.wav and they delivered a final edit hours later MyMusic.wav. No original capture sound files, no edit versions in the middle, no safeties, and no backups.
