Flac Mac Attack

Since very few developers are on Macs, it's probably good to know that FLAC isn't supported on QuickTime. I've been managing those guitar test clips in 44100, 32-float FLAC and they're functionally invisible to the Mac except through Audacity 1.3.12.

Same for Windows Media Player.
There are plug-ins to enable Flac support on both Quicktime and WMP.

Quicktime plug-in: http://www.xiph.org/quicktime/about.html
WMP plug-in: http://xiph.org/dshow/downloads/

Foe Windows users I'd recommend using Foobar2000 instead of WMP as their audio player.

For Windows Media, we use the Flip 4 Mac player plugin. That will handle picture and sound.

I never had problems with FLAC files on mac... But I already had a lot of stuff installed prior to audacity, such as ffmpeg for OS-X.

As for media players I'd recommend VLC. It's my default audio player on the Mac. I've also successfully used it a couple of times on windows to watch divx/xvid/matroska/etc movies (which I couldn't play in any other app I tried) on my father's laptop.

Only OS I don't like VLC is on Linux. I sort of... have some personal issues with the GUI of the version in Debian package. Usually I prefer the old xmms (version 1, which reminds me of good old days of winamp on windows a long long time ago) to play my mp3s :)

I use VLC and we have other code sprinkled around. It's the bottom of the list if we can't get anything else to work. It would be closer to the top of the list except we have to maintain consistency across multiple divisions of the company and multiple time zones. We also need to make sure clueless clients can play our work -- not that we have clueless clients. I'm just saying if we did.
