Matched sample rates are very important for any computer, and though Mac is typically very good at automatically setting the device's sample rate to match Audacity's sample rate, it appears Mac didn't in this case. Therefore, open Audio MIDI Setup utility and make sure the format (sample rate) is the same as what you want in Audacity. Audio MIDI Setup should follow Audacity's settings, but for an unknown reason, that didn't happen for A.J. in the above post.
