Non functioning Pause Button when recording

I have a macBook Pro Laptop running Snow Leopard, latest version. I am also using Audacity 1.3.12 beta, and until now been relatively problem free, but the last few days when trying to pause between LP tracks I found that the Pause button failed to work, in other words it kept on recording. Anyone come across this before? and any ideas on how I can get around it. Any help will be gratefully received.

There seem to be a few reports of this on Leopard/Snow Leopard. First, exit Audacity and remove all the contents from the audacity.cfg settings file except "NewPrefsInitialized=1" at the top. See:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Audac ... reset_beta

If that does not help, click Go > Utilities > Disk Utilities. Select your system drive and Verify Disk. When that's done, Repair Permissions.

Hi Gale and may I apologise for being so slow in replying to your very helpful Email. We had a family medical crisis last few days and things were a bit hairy, but settled now. Re the non-funtioning Pause button when recording. I have completed Options 1 and 2 and just about to find out whether everything is ok now. This may seem an odd way to do it but I wanted you to know the reason for you not hearing from me. Will get back to you asap.

Gale,
Just been recording again and nothing I'm afraid has changed, the Pause button still does not work. What happens when recording and I use the button is it flickers on and off and the recording actually slows but does not stop, so the only way I can record at present is to to do one or two songs together on the LP and then stop recording, turn over and begin again-- frustrating to say the least. Back to you again I'm afraid. I hope I carried out all your instructions correctly. I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination.

While Audacity is open.

Audacity > About Audacity. Read the version number to us.

OS-X 10.6.4 Snow Leopard
2.66 Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro
Audacity 1.3.12

Record Pause seems to work as advertised.

I press record and then pause and then the recording switches every time I press Pause. While I'm in Record Pause, few if any other buttons work except Stop.

I tried multiple recordings using the P key to pause instead of clicking on the pause graphic.

I restarted Audacity multiple times and recorded (the built-in microphone in my case) several times in new shows with multiple pauses in each show.

I did notice one oddball. The Spacebar seems to stop the recording, but Transport > Stop dropdown claims no shortcut -- the space for the shortcut information is blank.

That's intended, though some might find it handy to edit while paused.

Thanks for the tests. I would have preferred to have "Play/Stop" in the menu which should in theory list its shortcut, rather than list "Play" and "Stop" separately with no shortcut listed because they don't have a default shortcut. You can see this in the Keyboard preferences, but the shortcuts will appear if you assign separate shortcuts to "Play" and "Stop" there. Anyone else feel strongly about that?

All the other reports of "Pause not working" were on 10.6.3 and in one of them, resetting the .cfg file did solve the Pause problem.

@jumbuck70, did you definitely exit Audacity before removing all the .cfg content except "NewPrefsInitialized=1"? Has anything else changed in the last few days that could be relevant? Have you installed other applications that use the sound device, like Skype? If you use P to pause instead, does that help? Note you can Stop, then hold SHIFT and press Record. That will record onto the end of the last recorded track as long as it is selected (click somewhere in the waveform if it isn't).

MacBookPro, 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo
MacOS-X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard
Audacity 1.3.12

Pause during recording works fine here (both from built-in mic and built-in line-in, I can try later recording from external usb device).
