CD Burning Difficulties

I am a new Audacity user. I hope to use the program for getting my vinyl records into my computer, onto CDs, and into my i-pod. My system consists of a turntable and phono preamp, an Apogee Electronics Mini Me AD converter, and an i-mac (10.4.10) In my first big test, I recorded an entire album (96K-32 bit floating), chopped it into tracks and then tried to burn a CD by creating a burn folder into which I dragged each of the songs after exporting them as AIFF [files]. I suspect that the files remained in their 96K versions because the burn folder indicated that I'd need a 1.43 GB disc on which to record the 40, or so minutes of music. I deleted songs from the burn folder until what was left would fit on a CD and then I burned it. Unfortunately, the resulting CD would not play on any of the CD players I have. Now, the question is: Do I have to commit to the 44.1K-16 bit standard before I transfer the vinyl to the computer, or is there (an easy) way to convert it from a higher resolution transfer?

Yes, to make a CD you should have files that are exported at 44.1kHz 16-bit PCM stereo (this is part of the Red Book standard for CDs).

You can continue to work in Audacity in 96k 32-bit float - just do the downsampling on Export from Aucaity by selecting the correct Export format that you need. Audacity will apply downsampling for you and will apply dithereing (you can turn that off or change the dither shape if you want to).

Make sure that you use CD-Rs and not CD-RWs and do mnake sure that you burn a music CD and not a data CD.

You may find this set of tutorials from the 1.3/2.0 manual helpful: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... iscs_to_CD
