Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

1.33 crashes when stop is pressed

Post by jarome » Mon Jan 21, 2008 6:16 pm

On Tiger, 1.33 always crashed when I started recording.

On Leopard, it worked for a few recordings. But then I changed to the line-in input, and now it crashes every time when I stop recording. Why haven't we gotten a newer build that does not crash? It has been at least 6 months now.

Audacity 1.3 is a beta version of Audacity. Users who want a completely stable, finished program should be using Audacity 1.2

The Audacity developers are working hard to bring out the new stable version (v.1.4) for all platforms, so I doubt that you will see many fixes to 1.3 before then.

I noticed a similar problem for one user on Windows. After trying a few things the person stopped posting, so either the last thing fixed it, or they gave up (I wish people would say). As I said, his problem was on Windows, but if you want to try some trouble shooting there may be some relevant information in that thread.

I have a similar problem with version 1.3.3 on a Macintosh, but only when recording with 24 bits.

When the default sample format is set to 24 bits in the Quality Preference window, Audacity version 1.3.3 crashes at the end of the recording, when the "Stop" button is pressed.
The same version has no problem with 16 bits recording.

Source: integrated line-in
Machine: Mac Pro (Intel CPU)
OS: Mac OS X 10.4.11
Sample rate: 44100 Hz
Quality: 24 bits

The Audacitys have issues with 24 bit sound.

So far I've been able to talk everybody out of using 24 bit sound since 16 bit sound is far better than anything you're likely to connect to it.

I do master live voice captures at 48000 16 bit and have far more problems with room noise and microphone hiss than I do digital format. If you are capturing from analog audio tape (in any format) or vinyl records, 24 bit is a complete waste of time in addition to being unstable.

48000 16 bit is the digital video format.

Hello:
I have the same problem, and before posting this reply I tried recording in 16-bit instead of 24, but that didn't work. I have a MacBook new, bought in January, with the Intel processor. I successfully recorded using Audacity with an older version, and will go back to 1.2.5 if I can't solve the problem with the Beta.
If there are any replies to this, thanks in advance, but it seems most of these posts are two months old and unsolved. Does anyone monitor this site?
Thanks again.

Jarome:
Thanks for your fast reply. I didn't know what you meant about a mac build somewhere until I downloaded 134, and discovered that all I had was a bunch of files I couldn't do anything with. I guess what you mean is that there is a program out there somewhere that will take the files I downloaded and make some sense out of them, turn it into an actual Audacity processor? I don't know much about the innards of programs.
Thanks,
Medren
