Problem : "Panning" and "Mix"

Post by 6kee » Thu Feb 18, 2010 3:33 pm

Mac OS X 10.4.11
Audacity 1.3.12
Audacity Preferences : Mono
Problem : "Panning" and "Mix"

Hello everyone,
The copy of the same track is melted once "Fade out" (Track 1), the other (Track 2) in "Fade in".
The button "panning" is "Centred" on each track.
If you mix the 2 tracks (mix and render).
We obtain as result (1 mono track) the expected result, all is well.

Now, the same exercise but with a panning not centred (whether on one, the other, or the 2 tracks).
and mix (mix and render) the 2 tracks mono.

We obtain as result (1 stereo track ? This is not the result expected ? "Gradually from center to left").
Result of "Mix and Render".png

What is wrong ?
Best regards

Actually it is (though obviously not what you were expecting).

If you "Mix and Render" one or more mono tracks and the "Pan" is off-centre in one or more tracks, the result will be a stereo track. Does that bit make sense?

Now to the details:
The upper channel of a stereo track is the Left channel, and the lower channel is Right.

A centre panned mono track plays equally through Left and Right channels.
If you pan a mono track toward the right, more sound will come through the right audio channel to your right speaker.
If you pan a mono track toward the left, more sound will come through the left audio channel to your left speaker.

The first mono (fade out) track that you have is centred and so is playing equally through both left and right speakers.
If you mix this track on its own to a stereo track, then the sound will appear equally on both left and right channels.

The second (fade in) track is panned to the extreme left so it will be playing through the left channel/speaker and not the right.
If you mix this track on its own to a stereo track, then the sound will appear in the left (upper) channel only and the right channel will be silent.

Mixing these two tracks together:
1) The left channel, as described above contains both the fade out and the fade in sounds. As we see in the upper (left) channel of the stereo mix, the sound fading in "takes over" from the sound fading out so the result is pretty well constant.
2) The right channel contains the fade out track and silence.

I think that the "problem" that you are experiencing is that the effect sounds more like "the Right channel fading out", rather than "panning from centre to left". As described above this is not really surprising as that is what is happening.

At the beginning you notice that there is equal amplitude sound in both left and right channels, so effectively there is twice as much sound at the beginning as there is at the end (2 channels playing rather than one). To get a more effective "panning"effect, reduce the level of the first (fade out centre) track by 6dB before you mix them.
