Bug: Now i am just dissappointed
My version of Audacity is 1.3
I'm using Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8
OK, Now heres the explanation!
Yesterday i was recording the sound for my new cartoon i am making.
So you know i saved the cartoon in a .aup file and decided to continue it tomorrow (Today) And suddenly when i open the file with Audacity i get this message!!!:
"Project check detected 40 missing audio data blockfile[s] (.au)
probably due to a bug, system crash or or accidental deletion. There is no way for Audacity to recover this lost data automatically". And there's a bunch of other text! Now all my hard work is lost and im freaking out!!!! What the hell!!!!!

No - if you read the thread you will see that Steve is suggesting making regular safety exports to WAV format - Audacity projects can sometimes be brittle and fragile =paticularly if is dependent on external music files that you later delete/move/rename. - have you done any of this?
The only time when it is tough to use WAV is you are handling a multi-track project.
And Steve also posted this link http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/CrashRecovery on crash recovery.
In 1.3, which I assume you are using since you posted in this part of the forum, crash recovery should be much more automatic (activated automatically on restarting Audacity).

Re: Bug: Now i am just dissappointed
the .AUP file is only one part of an Audacity project. It is the part that tells Audacity how to put all of the little bits of data (.AU files) together. Every project has an AUP file and a data folder. There may also be data that is required by the project elsewhere on your computer. If this is the case, Audacity will warn you. Read the warning messages, don't just dismiss them - they contain important information.korri wrote:i saved the cartoon in a .aup file
See here for an explanation about Audacity projects. This is probably the single most important part of the documentation to avoid loosing work. http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/File_Management_Tips

Re: Bug: Now i am just dissappointed
Glad it was that simple - as I said Audacity doesn't take well to having its files moved around - but glad you got it back ok.

Re: Bug: Now i am just dissappointed
Phew! You were lucky
It is often a good plan to create a folder on your computer and Save your projects there - the .AUP and the data folder are then kept tidily together in the same folder.
Remember to keep backups as you go.
If you are recording, export a WAV (or uncompressed AIFF) copy asap.
A good way to back up projects is to regularly "Save As..." the project with a new name. Each time you do so it creates a new project file and a new data folder. This uses a lot of disk space, but if you have sufficient space it can save heartache if something goes wrong. Once you have exported your finished masterpiece you can delete the Audacity projects to recover disk space (note that there is no going back after you have deleted the project).
