I cant get audacity to acknowledge my m audio fire wire solo inbox. Im using it to try and run an external mic into the program for better recording. When I go to the drop down menu in the upper right I only have the option for internal mic. how do I get my inbox to work with audacity?!

First, go to System Preferences > Sound > Input and see if you can select the m-audio box. If you can, select it. Then try with your mic to see if you are getting levels into the Sound preference panel. Adjust the input volume control while watching the input level meter (blue bars).

If that test passes, start Audacity. Go to Audacity > Preferences then click Devices. In the recording pane, see if you can select the m-audio box. If you can, click OK in the Preferences dialog.

Back in the Audacity main window, that little pop-up menu with "Internal Microphone" in it will have disappeared. This is good. Click on the recording meters to put them in monitor mode. Talk into your mic and adjust the input volume with the recording slider. The slider may not work - this is not a problem. Set it to maximum. You should see the same input level as you saw in the system Sound Preferences Panel.

when i go into system pref my m audio does not show up. it is powered on and connected to the computer correctly though. It just says "audio line in port" and if i select it no levels show (blue bars).

Go to Applications/Utilities or Go > Utilities and open "Audio Midi Setup". If necessary click the "Audio Devices" tab at the top. Click on the "Default Input:" and "Properties For:" popup menus and see if the m-audio device is listed. If it is, select it in Default Input then look at your choices after you select it in "Properties For".

If you can't select it anywhere in Audio Midi Setup it's time to call M-Audio support or check their web site.

You may need to download the latest drivers for your version of OS X.

Hey bill, its been a while.

I got my computer to recognize the fire wire solo and get the blue bars on my computer to pick up my mic, but I can't get audacity to pick it up. Audacity recognizes that the solo is there and i can select it as the recording device but it will not pick up a signal and I cant get it to record! I feel im sooo close. any thoughts? thanks for your continued help!

is it because I have snow leopard on my computer? has any one gotten an external mike to work on their mac w/ audacity who is running on snow leopard!?

I have kind of the same problem. I found that the only way to see the XLR mic input from the M-Audio Solo is to tell Audacity to use the "FW Solo (1560) as the input device and record 3 channels. The first 2 are probably the line inputs on the back and the 3rd channel is the mic. I haven't found a way to just record the mono mic input. Audacity records 3 separate channels and I delete the first two leaving me with the channel I want. Not a very convenient thing to do but it does work.

If anyone knows a magic incantation to say to get just the mic channel selected I'd love to know it.
