OS X 10.4.11 crash

... I can't get the 1.3.7 download to complete; maybe I was using a bad URL? I just edited the 1.3.9 URL from the official links page to "1.3.7" but it aborted part way through and seems not to work now.

downloads OK for me at the moment.

I'm not on a Mac, and I'm not sure if you already tried this or what issues you might have with running apps deeper into the file system... but to eliminate another possibility, did you do what we recommend?
1. Inside your Applications folder, create a folder called "Audacity"
2. Double-click the downloaded .dmg to mount it
3. Option-drag the whole of the .dmg contents (not the .dmg itself) into the "Audacity" folder you created
4. Double-click Audacity.app inside the Applications folder to launch it

Maybe a little extreme troubleshooting is in order. Can you install a clean OS on an External FireWire drive, boot to it, install Audacity and see what happens? That's how I test Snow Leopard on my Intel machine. I don't actually use Snow Leopard for anything else. That machine runs Tiger.

Gale - yes, every time I install a new version for testing I go through that exact process.

Koz - can't reboot my main machine for a day or so because I'm running A/V stuff that has to get done this weekend for a friend. What I can do is install on my dual G4 in the meantime, which has a fresh 10.4.11 load. I strongly suspect a fresh OS X image on my dual G5 will work - just need to isolate what's running on my normal install that is causing this. I've had an older video codec crash totally unrelated software before, so it's not like I haven't seen it happen. Just a slow painful thing to troubleshoot.

I know how that works.

You understand where I'm going, right? If an external boot works correctly, then the basic machine is in perfect working order and we can look somewhere else. Or more accurately, you can look somewhere else and we can go drink tea.

And go shopping.

Yes, and I think we're pretty much done here. I will bet that it's still something running on that installation that I haven't managed to kill or isolate yet. You're free to carry on elsewhere with a hot cup of Earl Grey.

I will do you the courtesy of posting what it is when I find it, though; it's only right. Thanks for the useful debugging info, too - I understand Audacity better than I did.

If you do produce a second bootable drive, you can use that to put your applications back in one at a time and see which one causes troubles. You can do this while your regular day to day activity is uninterrupted on your main boot.

Lots good to be said for multiple boots.

And yes, I'm perfectly clear what's going to happen. You're going to completely replicate your daily boot on the second boot and everything will work perfectly and with excellent stability -- but only on the second boot drive.

I installed 1.3.7 on my wife's iMac G5, and my downstairs dual G4 with a fresh 10.4.11 build. The iMac copy works great, the dual G4 copy... hangs. Neither machine has any additional audio plugins installed.

I'm just about to the point that I can set up a second boot drive for my upstairs G5 and try it. Very curious to see what happens. I'll try 1.3.10 as well on all machines.

That's building up to be the Universal Get Out Of Jail card. Support for modern machines is much better in that version.
