Required software extensions are missing

Hi,

I'm using the latest daily build (Audacity 1.3.9-alpha) on Mac OS 10.4.11.

When opening the application, this error occurs:
Image
"Required software extensions are missing"

It then directs me to the Pace Anti-piracy site.

Should this be happening? It seems very odd. I would be most grateful if anyone has any suggestions as to what to do in order to get Audacity to open.

Many thanks for your help.

You're downloading and running alpha software because you're a developer? It can't be because you want to use it for sound production.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. No, I'm not a developer.

When this problem first occurred (on an older version of Audacity 1.3), I read through these forums to see whether anyone else had experienced similar problems. I wondered whether the problem was related to VST extensions and saw that users were being advised to download the latest alpha version. I tried this, but unfortunately it doesn't appear to have fixed the problem.

Do you have any ideas as to what I should do? As I'm sure you can imagine, it's very frustrating not being able to open Audacity.

Many thanks once again.

What version was that?
If it was 1.3.7 or earlier and you did not have the "VST bridge" plug-in installed in Audacity, then it is nothing to do with VSTs.
VST support in Audacity before version 1.3.8 was provided by an additional download - the "VST Bridge" - as Audacity had no VST awareness built in.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I had the same problem in v1.3.7 and I did not have the "VST bridge" plug in installed.

So this would appear to rule out VSTs as being the caused of the problem (thanks - at least this rules out one possible cause).

Does anyone know what could be causing the "Required software extensions are missing" dialogue and what I can do to get Audacity to open normally?

Many thanks once again! All suggestions gratefully received.

Could be an AU (Audio Unit, Apple equivalent for vst) that's asking for this PACE thing.

Here's a little thing from the Apple web site...

kozikowski and george13, thank you both very much. I think we might be getting close to finding the cause.

I have been searching through my hard drive to try to find any AUs or similar that might be responsible.

Unfortunately, I haven't managed to identify the culprit(s) yet. I do have some AUs in my Mac OS 10.4 SDK and also some in Library/Audio/Presets/Apple, but that is all that I have found.

Can anybody offer me any other clues as to what to look for? Thank you once again.

PS. If it helps at all, here's the top part of the crash log:

Hi,

Posting the crash report was definitely helpful (you didn't say Audacity crashed!).

It says:
Thread 0 Crashed:
0 com.nomad.PH2S 0x05d062ac CVST2AUPluginEntry + 0
So some Audio Unit made by a nomad.com seems to have caused the crash. On Mac OSX (at least in 10.4, don't know if that has changed recently) the Audio Units are to be found in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/ or in yourHomeDirectory/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/. Maybe you can identify the bad one.

And just because you can't make this stuff up. You'll never guess what "Kozikowski" means...
