YES, it crashes constantly on Mac OSX
Have mac mini, 2 ghz intel core 2 duo, osX version 10.5.4
I have protools installed, but never running at same time. Also have mbox hardware.
TRY to use audacity for basic dialog recording, one track, mono. Simple stuff. I am NOT running any other software or program at the same time. I have tried restarting fresh, everything I can think of. AUDACITY is not stable.
btw, older version 1.2 was even less stable on intel machine.
Audacity 1.3.7.1 ...
1) When I load, it ALWAYS wants to load izotope Vinyl plugin and asks for registration info. When I delete any izotope vinyl on my hard drive, it is RECREATED everytime I start Audacity up. Don't understand that. Annoying.
2) More importantly, when using Audacity, constant crashes. Happens when scrolling or attempting to edit a recorded (one track) file. Freezes up, hangs up. Has to FORCE QUIT. But then FAILS to fully force quit. Must restart entire computer. Happens eventually on EVERY SESSION.
3) Downloaded 1.3.8.0...
COMPLETELY FAILS TO OPEN. "unexpected" crash error message. Following previous posts, have deleted all old preferences etc. before loading, trying to start. FAILS to make any difference.
Read alot by a guy named Koz... don't know what you are using, why it works for you. Don't for me.

Boy, that's a bad idea. The guy has no clue. None at all.
Boggle, maybe. Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, even Monopoly. But no Clue.
<<<don't know what you are using, why it works for you>>>
I got an idea. The Mini is a multi-boot machine so I can keep a very simple Leopard install and run it with no competition. That's the closest one I have to a normal install of Audacity 1.3.8. It opens with no fuss, does simple editing (so far) and closes. When I open up /Applications, the machine has 30 resident programs. That's all.
The other Intel machine, the MacBook Pro was much more of a problem. That one is a working machine and I beat the peanuts out of it daily. I removed 1.3.7 which went through several live feature film sound shoots with no problem at all, and installed 1.3.8 (after clearing out all the old setup and config files.)
The program did not want to wake up. I launched it the first time and it wouldn't launch. I tried it again and it launched, but made a big fuss about it and I got the SBBOD several times. Eventually, I got it running but it wasn't easy for either of us. It will launch with less fuss now -- multiple times later, but I always get the SBBOD, meaning the process is taking way longer than the time allotted to it by Leopard.
I plan on putting 1.3.7 back on if I need to do anything serious with this machine. So yes, it's "working," but not ready for Hollywood.
You, on the other hand, have a conditionally stable machine. If you can't tell me exactly where all your applications and plugins came from, then there is no chance of any of this working. Each major package loads environments for itself and while it's not Windows®, the other applications have to deal as best they can. Do you run Skype? That's pretty much the last nail in the coffin. With Skype, you have, by conservative estimate, six different programs with their fingers in Sound Services.
Audacity is something of a canary in the coal mine. If the complexity of the machine is past a certain point, Audacity will simply refuse to run. You may be the poster child for using Something Else instead of Audacity.
There is a history of this, too. There is no stable Audacity 1.2 that will run on our machines. The combination of Mac/Intel/Leopard will no longer run Audacity 1.2.5. Tiger would, but not Leopard.

Re: YES, it crashes constantly on Mac OSX
Thanks, Koz, for the reply...
Checked out the link you provided (I already had previously)... I've done all the permissions stuff... in fact, recently had to reload system software, updates... a mess of wasted time. Still, Audacity not working very well, as I mentioned before.
Very sad, because Audacity (especially the new version) is almost a dream come true... a simple, intuitive audio program. I'm dating myself, but I've dearly missed SoundEdit16v2 since the last century. Why is there no replacement for something like that?
I COULD post a print out of one of those crash reports here... would that be useful?
I understand that the mac mini may be 'too complex'... (but I don't have Skype)... the idea that you can't even have other applications on your hard drive (not running) without screwing up Audacity is very limiting, to say the least.
I find I can 'sort of' use 1.3.7.1 if I assume it will crash at any second and restart each time I begin any sort of new task (recording, editing.) 1.3.8 won't even open up.
Do you think these issues will be fixed? They're pretty important drawbacks.

Re: YES, it crashes constantly on Mac OSX
Because I attempted to update system software from Apple and the download terminated and I quit without realizing so the machine would not reboot. So had to back up the hard drive and reinstall system. Truth is, I was messing about trying to see if I could eliminate any potential conflicts that might be hampering Audacity. I was also having trouble with an older version of Firefox. It tended to freeze once in awhile (which never happened before)... I believe that was because it was not the newest version. As far as I can tell, everything is now about as clean and well-running as I can make it.

Still, I bet it's not everything you can do.
What are the sizes of all the drives mounted -- connected to the machine? Doesn't matter if they're being used or not. Connected is good.
How much physical memory?
Do you leave your computer on and lit up overnight -- specifically a 4AM? Most people don't. Do you know how to manually run Periodic (the noun, not the verb)? And/Or do you run MacJanitor? Those are all related. The operating system organizes, compresses, and stores all of its logging files once a day, week, and month around 4AM. If it never does that, the system will gradually become constipated which is deadly on programs that are time critical. Let me know.
Go> Utilities > Disk Utilities > Verify Disk on all mounted drives. It's usually a bad idea to repair anything at this point, so don't.
You've been through Repair Permissions.
Ever run a memory tester?
http://www.memtestosx.org/joomla/index.php
This one must be run from the command line, so it's a little scary, but that means it can test the greatest part of the machine without exclusion. The test must make it all the way through at least three times and it can take several hours. It will drive a Deskside Mac nuts (G5, MacPro) because the heat manager fails and the fans go up to full volume. That's OK. You're not going to run it this way, it's just for testing.
Let us know how that all goes. Don't leave out any steps or numbers.

Re: YES, it crashes constantly on Mac OSX
Some versions of the Firefox Flash plug-in have been known to cause problems with Audacity - it should be OK with the latest version, but worth testing Audacity from a cold boot without opening Firefox.
9/10 questions are answered in the FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
Re: YES, it crashes constantly on Mac OSX
I've done that many times. As I said, I NEVER start Audacity with any other programs open. In fact, I make a point of restarting my computer before trying to open Audacity. In fact, I have done permissions and disk verify/repair and restarted (cold boot) before trying to run Audacity.

Re: YES, it crashes constantly on Mac OSX
Hmmm... alright....
I am not using any other drives (I tried to work Audacity on an external drive, like I do with protools but it made no difference, still crashed after a few activities.) Should I keep trying? I do not keep external drives connected that are not being used.
I have about 16 GB free on the internal hard drive right now. Out of about 120GB. Most of that is storage I could probably get rid off... but...
I don't keep the computer on overnight, etc. In fact, numerous times over the past few days I have restarted, run successfully disk utilities (permissions repair, disk verification)...
I have not run mcJanitor or Periodic or other tests you mention below. I'm only human, I can't buy or download all that right now... or take apart my entire system again!
I HAVE extensively, constantly worked on animation and editing software, as well as audio software for over ten years. I can run Protools 7 with Mbox hardware and record extensively with no technical issues. I run a wacom cintique for monitor. Everything works fine, consistently, professionally for hours and hours and days and days with all sorts of rendering and editing and etc. with stability that is crucial to my work.
But not Audacity. Not old version. Not new version. Crashed today after about 3 minutes.
Fact is, how can anyone be expected to jump through the hoops you are suggesting just to get a free piece of 'convenient' software to work? I cannot dedicate a separate (mac) computer just to Audacity! (No other software allowed.)
You can get it to work, apparently... I don't know how. I don't know what you do with it.
Remember, all I am trying to do is record in mono and edit and export the recorded track.
I am sure I could follow your instructions and get my 8 month old mac to work better, be 'cleaner' but it begs the question of how BAD this Audacity software must be if all this is necessary.
BAD, do you understand. BAD software.
I would say, frustrated at this point, RIDICULOUSLY BAD SOFTWARE THAT IS USELESS FOR NORMAL USAGE BY ANYONE WHO IS NOT A PROFESSIONAL COMPUTER GEEK.
Fix it or kill it. Please.
