<<<But does that mean it is running on your system without any problems?>>>
Yes, both. Intel Mac Mini and Intel MacBook Pro. Leopard. I haven't tried to recut 'The War Of The Worlds' radio broadcast, but they both launch.
They are running different 1.3.8 versions. The Mini got the plain version from the download web site. The MacBook got the latest patch RC1-2009 07 21. It did take some doing before the MacBook was happy. I got the SBBOD a couple of times, but the software always launched.

Native Instruments
Installation folder not found. Please select a folder now.
I choose OK,... it asks for the folder, I point it to the Native Instruments folder I have on my machine, then Audacity quits.
Any suggestions? I was previously on 1.3.3 and it worked just fine.

Almost all the issues people are experiencing with 1.3.8 crashing on launch on Mac are due to Audacity trying to load incompatible VST plug-ins - usually VST instrument (VSTi) plug-ins. This is clearly the case here. Audacity does not support VSTi.
Please see:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... ive_issues
and read the help link cited there, that is this one:
http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 37&t=11534
Please try the latest Mac Nightly Build mentioned there, which is still having fixes added for this problem. Make sure you get the latest build at the bottom of the Nightly Builds list. Audacity 1.3.8 should be ignoring VST instrument plug-ins, but the new built-in VST support is still a little over-enthusiastic.
If you still get this problem in the latest Nightly Build, please let us know. Meantime to fix it yourself, simply rename all the folders mentioned in that topic where Audacity looks for VST plug-ins. Then it will stop asking anything about Native Instruments.

That was my problem, but I solved it a different way (and my Audacity never crashed). WireTap Studio had installed something called "Camel Audio" without telling me. I removed Camel Audio extensions and tools and Audacity immediately became snappy and responsive.
But yes, automatically loading every extension it can find may not be such a good idea.

Up till now, I thought your conclusion of the insufficient disc-space might be correct.
BUT, I cleaned up my harddrive and now have 37GB free. That really should be enough to have audacity running. Still: It won't start. Same problem as described above. And other users are reporting this behaviour, too.
I don't want to annoy you, but this really should be fixed somehow...

Well THANK YOU Koz!
When I first posted about this issue, the nightlys didn't fix my problem, but now they do. This is great. Maybe this should be somehow released (as a minor update like 1.3.8a) because on many sites people complain about this...

Yes, but I believe that they are planning for at least two potential Release Candidates on the way - so expect to see 1.3.9 and 1.3.10 appearing ...
