I know this topic has been discussed before, but I'm asking a slightly different question....
I've been using Audacity 1.3.6 for quite some time on a computer running XP Pro, and haven't encountered any problems. Most of my projects are exported as mp3's.
I wanted to try 1.3.7, and thought it best to uninstall 1.3.6 beforehand, which I did.
I downloaded 1.3.7 and the latest version of Lame (3.98.2) and parked it in the Audacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode) folder. When prompted for the location of the Lame encoder, I make sure the location is correct.
However, when I click "ok" to export a project, I get the message "Could not open MP3 encoding library."
I thought that if 1.3.7 was too unreliable, I could download 1.3.6 again (and the appropriate Lame) and continue on as before. I should have confirmed that first, because now I can't find 1.3.6 on the Audacity website!
I hope someone out there can help me recover from this .... I rely on Audacity a lot!
Thanks in advance,
Tony Allen in Saskatoon Canada

Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Re: "Could not open MP3 encoding library."
Thanks for replying! I did download the latest Lame, right after I downloaded Audacity 1.3.7, so I think there must be some other explanation. That's why I was asking if there was any source for downloading the 1.3.6 .exe file again (and the appropriate older Lame version if necessary) so I could go back to using it. Of course, I realize I should have had the good sense to keep the original download .exe of 1.3.6 and the Lame I was using with it, on my computer! Had I done so, the recovery would be easy.

Re: "Could not open MP3 encoding library."
If you really can't get it to work (I know from reading other threads that lately there have been some conflicts bewteen Audacity and Lame versions - but I thought the developers had fixed all that) - then a suitable workaround would be to export as WAV and then find yourself a standalone WAV to MP3 converter. A quick google of t'interweb should probably find you a free one - you can even get iTunes (free to download) to do it for you, but it's a bit fiddly.

I can't get this to work either. I have spent the last 3 hours reading post after post and trying this and that. The latest lame download must be bugged. This is very frustrating.
Re: "Could not open MP3 encoding library."
Ok, I fixed the problem by installing .net framework. I was installing it for another program but noticed this one started working correctly after that. Not sure if it had anything to do with it or if it was just a fluke.
