How to make mic level same as MP3 track

Post by smiles » Tue May 05, 2009 12:11 am

I'm trying to record a track that I will combine with an MP3 track already recorded.

When I play the MP3 track while I'm recording, my voice track input levels are way too low. I've messed around with the mic levels and still cannot figure out a way to make the MP3 as well as my track come out the same level of volume/intensity - as if we are both in the same recording room.

Suggestions? I'm reading through the tutorials and instruction sites, but need this info sooner than I can seem to get through the wiki.

Thanks for any help out there.

Can we assume the MP3 is a widely distributed popular song from a Major Label?

The first time you do live recording into your own microphone you discover that it's easy to get open, airy, natural, realistic performances. You also discover that it doesn't sound anything like the dense, processed, powerful, loud, range corrected performances on CDs and iTunes downloads.

To get from one to the other requires Post Production and Effects tools like the compressors, leveler, and Chris's Dynamic Compressor which you have to download.

Chris may be all you need. It's a remarkable tool.

After you get close enough, you might also discover you can't sing, but there's no Effect to fix that.

  - actually Koz I thought that you can now get pitch correction devices to fix off-key singers (you probably know much more about this than most given your background?)

The MP3 is a home recording by someone else.
My recording does not include singing.
I'll check out the compressor.
Thanks.

<<<more about this than most given your background?)>>>

My background is television news. Last I checked, Andrea Mitchell doesn't need pitch correction.

<<<The MP3 is a home recording by someone else.>>>

Are you trying to do that thing where two people work on the same song, one in Cleveland and the other in Seattle? I would be staying far, far away from MP3. MP3 is a delivery format, WAV is a production format. MP3 creates damage in the sound and it gets worse the more work you do on the song.
