Missing Timer Record in Tracks Menu

Post by colinsmithathome » Thu Apr 30, 2009 7:46 am

Dear All,

I posted this last night but the post has gone. I hope I've not broken any forum rules by posting this here. Please let me know where I can raise this issue without it being deleted :)

As topic subject Timer Record is mssing from the tracks menu on my Vista PC Audacity v1.3.7.

Any ideas, please?
Am I misunderstanding where to find it, I thought it was 2nd item in?
Was there an option at install time that I forgot to tick?

regards,
Colin Smith

The developers (sensibly IMHO) have moved it to the Transport dropdown - or you can use the keyboard shortcut SHIFT+T

Dear waxcylinder,

thanks for responding, I'll have a look tonight.

Is there anywhere I could have found this information?

I've looked through all the documentation I could, maybe you have to know that it's there to know where to look, if you follow!

regards,
Colin

Colin,

this is one of the downsides of using Beta software - you do get all the nice new features, but stuff is subject to change (see the extracy from the Audacity Wiki below.

Beta version
Audacity 1.3 Beta is our new, not quite finished, development version which will be the basis of our next "stable" version.
Contains dozens of new, exciting features. Very occasionally, these might need final polishing or not be retained in later versions.
Occasionally, a feature might not work as it did before, or might be temporarily disabled.
Some parts of the program are not yet documented or translated into different languages.

Full documentation for the new version will not be available until v1.4 is released - indeed 1.4 will not be released until the documentation is available. The 1.4 manual is currently work-in-progress.

This page in the Wiki lists the changes in the various 1.3 versions: http://audacityteam.org/download/features-1.3-a#details

This is a link to the (incomplete) 1.4 manual: http://www.audacityteam.org/manual/inde ... =Main_Page

From the Wiki link above you should see that the Tracks menu only appeared in 1.3.6 - and, just like you, I temporarily "lost" the Timer record till I got a steer from one of the developers.

Dear waxcylinder,

no worries, I understand the enthusiasm of developers for features and the converse for documentation!

It was just in case I had missed a document. I have since found a thread where another user lost the feature when it moved from tracks to transport.

Another question follows:
Can I use timer record to awaken the computer from any low power mode e.g. sleep?

Colin

Don't know the answer to this one as the PC that I use for timed recording doesn't hibernate (just the screen) - so I'd suggest doing a little test experiment - and I'd be interested in hearing feedback from you on what happens....

Dear waxcylinder,

I set a timer record as a test and pressed the Z button on my keboard which I usually use to put the PC to sleep.
The PC slept but did not awaken.
I woke it sometime later and a recording, I think for the duration I had set, started,

Colin
