Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Multiple Export WAV Crashes on 1.3.7

Post by jgullixson » Tue Apr 28, 2009 10:37 pm

I have a PC with XP, 45 GB of free space on a 100 GB hard drive, 2GHz processor speed, and 2 gigs of RAM.

I'm importing short wave files (4 that are total of 5MB in size), using noise reduction and leveller, then when I try multiple export for Windows WAV files (or any other export resulting in windows WAV files), Audacity is immediately crashing.

It worked once, but after that, I'm moving towards 20 crashes.
I've tried:
Uninstalling 1.2.6 (I had both to begin with)
Uninstalling and reinstalling 1.3.7
Doing export (single) selection instead (still crashed)
Looking for a solution on the forum (but all topics seem to be about MP3 export problems...not wavs)
I haven't installed any plug ins
I have the default properties for export/import

My coworker has a very similar setup, and has not experienced this problem. Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong, or whether this is a glitch with the application?

It's almost never a glitch with the application.

You have a billion gigs of drive space available, but did you error check and defrag it?

Past the first one, did any of your Audacity installs ask you "English?" at the beginning? If they didn't, then you didn't do a "clean" install.

Windows Audacity 1.2 stores its preferences in the Dreaded Windows Registry. If you damage Audacity, the preferences get stuck. If you install 1.3, I believe it looks at the registry to see what to do instead of writing an audacity.cfg file which is what all other audacity programs do.

Unless you got rid of all the preferences either by trashing the audacity.cfg file or deleting 1.2 and the Registry entries, you didn't actually reinstall audacity. It must ask you "English?'

I ran the windows xp defrag on my disk, uninstalled 1.3.7 again, and reinstalled it, taking note to be certain that I got the "choose language: english" prompt--which I did--and tried the multiple wave export once again.

Sorry to report that it crashed again. Not sure if xp gives me the capability to check for errors...only defrag.

Not wanting to try a reg edit on my bread and butter work machine. Although I believe anybody can access through the run command, it is risky to have non administrators use this tool, who are unfamiliar with the editing environment. I've only used reg edit in IT classes I've taken years ago. But, I don't recall selecting a bad preference. I only tried to put those on the "safe" settings after the problem started.

Do you know if the quality on the export on the 1.2.X versions is the same as the 1.3? 1.2 actually worked for me, but my coworker likes 3 better, with the addition of the leveller.

If it asked you "English?" then you did a "clean install." No need to mess around in the Dreaded Windows Registry.

We wish the developers would stop calling 1.3 the "unstable" version. There is a series of newer Mac machines where 1.3.7 is the only versions that works reliably.

"Leveler" isn't the only improvement in 1.3. Many of us use tools that are only available in 1.3.

<<<I'm importing short wave files (4 that are total of 5MB in size),>>>

Where did you get those wav files from? Can you export the whole show as AIFF? If you can, do it, open the AIFF file and put the export markers in again, then Export Multiple -- WAV. The Export business is enormously easier in 1.3...

Are you trying to use illegal file names? Upper and lower case letters, numbers, dash and underscore. Nothing else.

Thanks for your help, Koz. I have another team mate with an HP laptop, and he took the files I was having problems with, downloaded 1.3.7, went through the process, and it is working on his PC.

We're going to work around to get the 200+ Wav's levelled and noise reduced from his PC. These files come from captivate...we're trainers. I had some parenthesis in the file name, when I had my first crash, but I've taken those out and tried it again, and it still crashed.

After it crashes, when I open it again, it asks if I want to recover those files I was working on before the crash.

It would still be great to get 1.3.7 working again (it worked once) on my PC. If I can't get this to work, in the future, I guess I can try to download 1.3.7 at home, and see if I can get that to work. When I uninstall, I use the add/remove programs that is in window's control panel.
