Windows Media Player can't play my MP3 files

I am converting my old records to MP3, using the Audacity Beta. When I export multiple to MP3, Media Player gives me message saying that it may not support the file type (mp3!) or the codec used to compress the file. I use Media Player version 11.0.5721.5260, running on Windows XP. If I export a single file there is no problem. Audacity 1.2.6 works as well . There is no problem with RealPlayer and I can play the files on my CD player. Any setting I have missed?

The default bitrate setting in Audacity 1.3 is 32-bit floating - I would try resetting that to 16-bit 44.1kHz (CD Red book standard).
