Windows 7 Recording Workaround

Using Windows 7 7068, I was having trouble getting Audacity to record from Analog mix or What u Hear, etc. The fix, after you set the playback and recording devices to MME:Microsoft sound mapper - Output and MME: Microsoft sound mapper - Input as they will not work any other way, is to set what u hear (or analog mix) as your default communications device rather than you default recording device. Click the windows orb (start button) and search for "sound", and click sound under control panel. Go to the recording tab. If you can't see analog mix, right click on any device and click "show disabled devices." Right click on the device you want to us as your recording device and click "set as default communication device." If you have trouble, try temporarily disabling the microphone.

I just installed Windows 7 and I am trying to use Audacity 1.3.9. I have a creative sound blaster X-fi Xtreme Audio card. Whenever I try to record the program wont do it, the bar that goes across just stays at 0 flashing until I stop the recording. Sometimes I get an error of..."Latency Correction setting has caused the recorded audio to be hidden before zero. Audacity has brought it back to start at zero.You may have to use the time shift tool to bring the track to the right place." I tried what you said but that didn't work for me. In my control panel recording tab in windows I have choices of microphone for sound blaster, line-in for sound blaster, and digital audio (S/PDIF) for sound blaster which is the default device. The digital audio option is the only enabled choice, I can not enable the others it's not an option. In Audacity preference for recording device my choices are Microsoft sound mapper input and Digital audio (S/PDIF). I've tried every combination of both of those items and they don't work, audacity wont record. Any Ideas? Thanks

If you get the recording cursor stuck at zero, reboot.

You have to enable the device you want to record from in the Recording tab in the Windows Control Panel. Right-click over the S/PDIF device > Show Disabled Devices or similar. Then you can right-click over the device you want to record from and enable that one so that it will show up in the Audacity preferences. To be on the safe side, exit Audacity and restart so it picks up the device you just enabled.

Go to the Creative web site and make sure you have the correct 1.04.000 driver for the X-fi card.

Thank you - your tip worked for me. I had to follow your suggestions right to the end - including microphone disable - but it works. Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit. Audacity 1.3.11 beta.

Where did you disable the mic - in the Recording tab of "Sound"? It should be possible for multiple devices to be enabled. Only one can be "default device", and only one can be "default communication device", but "default device" can be different from "default communication device" (which is actually meant for assigning a device to be used for computer telephone calls). We usually suggest to make stereo mix the default, but that should not disable the other devices.

This is gibberish. For me windows 7 assumes the USB is for speakers. And I see no solution. Audacity need to fix this bug. Or Microsoft solves the bleaking error. Maybe, as in my case, Lenco, should foot the bill. For my USB turntable.

This is actually a different question, and should be posted in a separate thread, but ...
When you connect a USB device, Windows will assume it is intended for both recording and playback unless you tell it otherwise.

In Audacity, Edit > Preferences > Devices, Set the playback device to your computer's sound card output.

In my Sound > Recording tab my only available device is Digital Input Device (SPDIF). The rest (2 microphones and line in) are unplugged.
In my Playback tab, I have speakers that need to be the default device for me to hear, and Digital Output Device (SPDIF), both enabled. Headphones device is not plugged in.
I cannot record any sound through Audacity 1.3.12-beta despite following all the instructions. Help Please!!!

Peter, what are you trying to record from? You say that your microphone and line in are unplugged, so what are you trying to record?
