Hello,
I have also encountered this problem of somewhat consistent ticks using 1.3.3 to transfer LPs to CD. I work in 24 bit and with 96000 to record (with M-Audio 2496). After attempting to identify the source of the ticks (thinking it was my amp, my RCA jacks, or my soundcard creating electronic interference in the form of ticks) I decided to then try an earlier version of Audacity which I had on my computer. So I tried 1.3.2 (it seems that neither of the other two who posted here have tried that recently but instead went back to 1.2.x). 1.3.2 no longer created the clicks in my tests. So I am thinking that the programming problem (?) may have been introduced in the transition from 1.3.2. to 1.3.3 (although I have not tried 1.3.1 to see if it is ok).
I hope this helps in identifying and correcting the problem in the program (I wish I new programming to help). I really think 1.3.3 and 1.3.4 are excellent in many other ways.

Clicks also noted here with 1.3.4 (48KHz). At first I thought something happened to my recording equipment, but after recording the same thing with 1.2.6, there were no clicks. My audio interface is an M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB.
1.3.4 is the first beta version I've tried, and I like the new features, especially the one that removes muted tracks during mixdown.

I have this effect as well. At random points some samples are missing. Guess there can be several reasons for this behaviour. The machine, running Vista in my case, could be busy doing other things at that moment. So we will want to stop it from doing that. How? Or the AntiVirus might slow things down, so some buffer is overrun and data is lost. So I'd recommend not having an on-access scanner working during recording or at least exclude the files in question.
But it could as well be that there are some buffers too small?
I observed the same phenomenon with other software as well, but just not as frequently.
Cheers

I have also encountered this pop noise. It's more like background clicks every other second or so. Problem is occuring in v.1.3.4 beta. I did not revert to previous versions to test for occurance with those.
ONLY occurs at 48,000 or 96,000hz:
I have always used 44,100hz project rate in the past when recording with older versions and with 1.3.4 beta but decided to try a higher bitrate the other day and noticed the clicking noise. I went back to check recordings I'd made a week earlier using 1.3.4 beta at 44,100Hz and the noise was NOT present. I concluded quickly it had to do with the project rate and decided to test by recording with no audio input. The clicking is present at 48,000hz and 96,000hz project rates only and is also visible in the graphical display as small spikes occuring regularly. It sounds like (and appears in the graphical display) that this is only occuring in the LEFT channel.
*** There are NO clicks or problems when recording at 44,100hz or lower project rate.
Pop / click noise recording fix?

After telling McAfee to "Disable On-Access Scan" I've noticed the clicking problem goes away at 48,000HZ.
Not sure about the other sample rates.
I'm using a Dell Dimension 9200 with lousy integrated Sigmatel audio with Audacity 1.2.6.

I had some older tests posted on Windows XP.
I just made a few trials in Vista, the problems are also there.
The missing samples issue previously described does NOT seem to be linked linked to virus checking (several tests with all services stopped show the same issue). Maybe some other glitches are linked to it though.
pop noise - traced to sound card

My clicks, pops, and crumbled sounds are fixed at long last .... (I hope!)
Have recently added a Digitech RP250 guitar multi-effects unit to my music recording gear. The RP250 has a USB interface to the PC.
All my previous Audacity recording was mic-in or line-in to onboard Sigmatel audio with clicks and pops at all but one sample rate in Audacity 1.2.6 and clicks and pops at all sample rates in any of the 1.3 beta versions.
Now with the RP250 I can try some recording via USB.
(The USB in/out appears as a device in the input/output dropdown menus in Audacity Preferences.)
In initial experiments I find no clicks, pops or other problems on USB at sample rates that were unusable via Sigmatel.
First experiments were in Audacity 1.2.6. so now I am keen to try the USB input into the latest Audacity beta version.
Will report back here if any problems reappear in 1.3 beta.
Conclusion: The Sigmatel onboard sound in my Dell 5150C was not up to the task. The RP250 is (in effect) an external sound card with USB interface - so I would guess the same fix could be achieved by others by adding a good USB external sound card.

Tested Audacity 1.3.5, problem seems solved!
Thanks to the dev team.

I have found that one of these pop patterns is linked to the waveform graphic. This applies to 126 and 135.
As it paints across the screen in steps whilst recording the interference pattern is generated consistent with each step.
I have found that if I minimise the application that interference is not recorded and the pops go away.
As for the second set of interference I have no ideas. Yet!

Further to my last:
The sample rate setting affects the second set of pop patterns as others have identified above.
I get a pop followed by a crumple about 1.6 secs apart in all sample rate selections.
The time between the pops is consistent for a given sample rate but varies within different sample rates.
So for example, for a sample rate of 44000 the pops are about 5.8 seconds apart. For a sample rate of 16000 the pops are about 16.6 seconds apart.
Can a programmer comment on this? Is this problem on the bug fix list?
