Suddenly hear nothing with external sound in v1.3.7
I have a Toshiba Satellite A100 laptop running Windows Vista Home Basic. As this laptop doesn't have a line-in socket, I normally use it with an exernal sound card (Creative Sound Blaster). All of a sudden, I can no longer hear anything when I use Audacity 1.3.7 with the external sound card (and external speakers through this sound card). If I press "play", the little green bars fluctuate, but I hear no sound. Things are fine if I use the laptop's internal sound card. Things are fine with Audacity 1.3.5 and 1.2.6, both with the external sound card and with the laptop's internal sound card. I only get the problem with the combination of 1.3.7 and the external sound card. I didn't have this trouble yesterday, so what has happened? I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling 1.3.7, but the problems still remains. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks.

Check in "Edit menu > Preferences > Audio I/O" and see what you have selected as the playback device. (if sound is coming from your internal sound card, then that must be what is selected, but you want to use the external sound card, so you must select that).

Many thanks! Your suggestion worked. I thought it would be something simple like that. I had looked round for some sort of options or preferences menu, but never thought of looking at the bottom of the "edit" menu. I should have looked more closely. Thanks again.
