Mono to Stero from mini DV tape

I am editing footage in iMovie that was directly imported from a miniDV tape. All the footage is mono. What is the simplest way to ensure my audio still matches my movie but is played in stereo?

There is no mono on a MiniDV tape. Did you tell iMovie to import it mono by accident (like that's never happened to me)?

Are you confusing Stereo with Two Track Mono? The best you can do with an actual mono show is two exact copies of mono on both audio tracks. You don't suddenly get the violins on the left and the trumpets on the right.
