Exported MP3 not recognised by Windows Media Player/Vista

Post by apc » Fri Mar 06, 2009 8:32 pm

I have exported some audio in MP3 format, but Windows Media Player refuses to play them - it says it does not recognise the Codec.

Real Player and WinAmp both fine, so it cannot be the lame encoder unless there are Media Player specific settings.

Has anyone else noticed this, and is there a solution?

Thanks.

Best suggestion that I can think of - don't use Windows Media Player. There are lots of better options freely available - VLC, Foobar 2000, Media Monkey, WinAmp, MPlayer .... (and for Linux only, the excellent Amarok and Rhythmbox).
But ignore me, I think RealPlayer is rubbish as well ;)

I would not use it out of choice - I tend to use WinAmp.

The issue is that 99% of the people listening to the MP3 will be using stock Media Player.

It must work surely?

Are you using the correct version of Lame? It needs to be the version from the main Audacity web site.
128kbps CBR is about the most standard form of MP3.

Also, WMP may be choking on the ID3v2 tags, so for compatibility with WMP, Export with empty metatags and use WMP to add the tags.

On this same topic, I export a WAV file to MP3, but then when I try to find that file to upload on a website, it can't be found. What happened?

<<<it says it does not recognise the Codec.>>>

I have responded to MP3 problems that vanished when the show/project was 16 bit and not 32-bit floating. It would be interesting to see if that helps.
