Trying to record over reording please help

Thank you for your time. I'm having trouble recording over something i've recorded already. I record something and when I press the record button again to record over that recording it stars recording the original recording and multiplies the volume hence making recording over the original useless. This option was working fine earlier but I don't know what could've happened. If you still don't understand what i'm trying to say imagine your recording a guitar riff and after you finish you wan't to add a solo so you start recording again. Now to play the solo you need to listen to the riff but, instead recording the solo it automatically records the riff and your microphone is far away from your speakers.

Do you record performances from the internet? The settings for that tend to be antagonistic toward live recording.

You have Audacity set to record "Mix Out" or something similar. It's not recording just your voice, it's recording the entire computer playback giving you echos, odd feedback, and sound level problems.
