I am using a laptop with windows vista home edition. It has a built in microphone. I am not trying to record through a microphone or anything, just the song exactly as it is on the internet. Everytime I try to record a song from youtube or windows media player with audacity, it records noises through the microphone (im guessing; when i play it back, i hear noises such as clicking, typing, and coughing) instead of the song! I have tried to tinker with the program settings but i cant seem to find the right way of making it work. Can somone please help me?

My favorite for this is Total Recorder. That will capture anything on your machine. There is a new version for Vista

It used to be that if you searched hard enough, you could find the tools inside Windows that would allow you to do this by opening up pathways that had been "retired" to a hidden tool box.

Windows Control Panel

However, some laptops are being delivered with those tools not only hidden, but removed.
