Using Audacity with Gearbox

Long time Audacity user and have never had any major problems. Up to now I've been recording by have a mic sitting next to my amp with the mic plugged into the computer, though when using multiple tracks certains amounts of latency occur.

I have recently bought a Line 6 Toneport UX2. On the software side of this I'm using the line 6 program Gearbox.

Now here's the problem. (I'm running Vista Ultimate 32-bit on a pretty high end PC) Whenever I plug the Toneport in via USB, Audacity (and Itunes) die. They refuse to open, and then as soon as I unplug the Toneport they open up immediately. Why? Is Gearbox/Toneport hogging resources needed by Audacity? Any advice on how to fix this problem is much appreciated.

Also, once I get Audacity and Gearbox/Toneport running in harmony, what settings do I need to tweak to have Audacity pickup the signal coming from Gearbox?

You have several problems.

1) You need to make sure the TonePort is setup to use the WDM drivers, NOT the ASIO drivers. Audacity cannot deal with ASIO drivers (thanks to legal problems). This is probably why Audacity isn't working (not sure about iTunes, I don't use it).

2) You're also never going to be able to record the output of Gearbox in a multitrack fashion. The problem is that Audacity needs to pull it's audio from something that calls itself a soundcard, not from a piece of software. This isn't a problem in the GNU/Linux world, but it is in the Windows world (I'm not sure if this can change in the future).

You'll always be able to record the sound coming out of your speakers, but you won't be able to make a multitrack recording using Gearbox, since Audacity would record your old tracks mixed in with the new track. I suppose you could go in a mix everything down to cancel it out of the new track, but you'll very quickly be pulling your hair out trying to do that.

I have no idea. Line6 should be able to tell you. The website said it supported both WDM and ASIO drivers, but it doesn't say how to switch between them.

Ye gods.... what can I do?
Hi, can you point me to a news posting or forum discussion on this Asio issue?

I've enjoyed working with audacity so far recording through my line6 bass pod xt live (worked great in version 1.2.x - thought I was using Asio drivers then but can't recall as it's been entirely uninstalled to use 1.3.x beta for some improved features I required) - but now I get quiet digital clicks/noise in my recordings. I've completely ruled out any software/hardware issues on my end apart from audacity (20 times over) and have no problem with trials of other audio programs when I'm using their Asio drivers.

I wish you luck and hope you get things sorted out to use asio drivers again - they seem to work best for my line6 and I would gladly use Audacity again at that time.
