I'm a novice using Audacity. I've used it several times making research interviews using a lap top PC, Audacity and nothing else. I've generated an MP3-version and made a written transcription of the interview by listening to this file from Real Player.
This method works, but the latest version of Real Player is missing the "rewind n seconds" (Ctrl +] doesn't work on my keyboard.
So - why shouldn't it work in Audacity? I've found a web page showing several keyboard shortcuts
(http://audacityteam.org/manual-1.2/keyb ... tcuts.html)
But which is "rewind n seconds".
Anybody who can enlighten me?
I need a keyboard shortcut "rewind n seconds"

Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Re: I need a keyboard shortcut "rewind n seconds"
One way is probably to click on the time bar at the top of the main tracks window - you can do this while it is playing, or in Pause mode ("P" key) or in stop mode (space bar to toggle play/stop). Playback will automatically commence from where you click.
Since you are familiar with just using the keys, this may take a little while to get used to, but since you can resume play at any point with just one mouse click I think that you will often find this to be the most convenient method.
Alternatively you can use the left cursor key while the track is playing.
This is called "Seek time while playing" / "Short period" and is configurable in the Audio I/O tab of Audacities preferences (see Edit menu > Preferences).
"Seek time while playing" / "Long period" is accessed with "SHIFT + cursor key". These keys can be used forward or backward.

Re: I need a keyboard shortcut "rewind n seconds"
Thank you for answering. I didn't quite get it, but I discovered the Audacity Preferences/Keyboard listing, and this was useful.
Using mouse/cursor while working with interview files is very time consuming. A keyboard alternative is almost always more productive, so my collection of keyboard shortcuts is steadily growing in most applications I use.
Perhaps someone out there is able to edit the keyboard listing? Ctlr/arrow left = 10 seconds rewinding...... (suggestion)

Re: I need a keyboard shortcut "rewind n seconds"
"Rewind All The Way To The Top" is the Home key, no? Control or Apple-F is Zoom Full and SpaceBar is Play? Is what you want different from these?
Control or Apple-E is zoom to selection (you do need the mouse for that one). Control or Apple-3 is zoom out in steps.
l've been known to edit hour long presentations pretty rapidly with those keys. And yes, if you know multiple instruments it's rough to change the fingerings when you shift.

Just in case we missed each other's English, Audacity will not scrub. There's no such thing as Chipmunk Speech as you drag the cursor back and forth to find a segment.
The video editors do that and it makes me nuts to go back and forth.

I'm just reading that again. Yes, that's a very old feature request. At any time in the editing, press - 4 0 0 [enter] and the cursor backs up four seconds. No need to go find the mousie or to click any special keys. Cursor offsets are always active.
