Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

While you have it open, can you capture anything and play simple sounds?

Pull down any of the three piano clips and see if they play. They're really short and guaranteed correct.

Do you have a lot of External Stuff hanging from your machine? USB Turntable? USB Sound Production Equipment? Video equipment? Skype?

That will happen if there are no recording devices available. Go into the Windows control panel and make sure that there is an available recording device. See here for details: http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... ng_devices

No...it crashes the application...I cant do anything with it, except clike the "Yes" button on the message that comes up saying that it crashed.....Now, if i DON'T click preferences, and try to get into that menu...I can do anything with it. everything works, i tried a lot of stuff with it, but the second i go to Edit > Preferences, to customize Audacity to fit my needs, it just crashes.

no, i don't have any external devices hooked up to my computer at all.

Well, i dont have any recording devices available (no microphone, or anything like that) you mean i cant use adacity without a recording device????
