Audacity running, but no graphics

Post by Rattle » Sat Nov 29, 2008 1:39 am

this is the second time this has happened to me. I go and click on the program, it loads as the name appears on a tab on the start bar. no error messages and if i open up a .au file, (on that i have made earlier) and hit space then i can hear sound. I don't see any graphics. I tried reinstalling it, same things happens.
What is going on here and how do can i make it work properly again?

What's going on is you're directly managing the AU files. Only the AUP file is supposed to do that. The AUP or Audacity Project Manager deals with lining up all the little AU files and produces the graphics.

If you have no AUP file, you have no show. If you've been messing around inside the _DATA folder, you may now have a damaged show even if you do find the AUP file.

Open Audacity and File > Open the AUP file and it will manage everything else for you.

When you get to a good stopping point, Export As WAV to get one single stand-alone sound file. Audacity does not Save sound files.

The next time you want to "reinstall" Audacity, don't bother with the actual program. Close Audacity and search for...

audacity.cfg

...and delete that. The next time Audacity launches, it will be at First Birthday.

Of course, if you move that file to a safe place and decide that the First Birthday didn't do what you want, you can put it back where it was and all your old settings will come back.
