Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

delete - when nothing is selected

Post by sagetyrtle » Thu Nov 13, 2008 1:47 pm

I'm used to selecting a portion of audio, hitting "delete" and that portion vanishes.

Lately, however - and I've tested this on both 1.3 and 1.6 - when I have *nothing* selected, and I hit "delete" (accidentally), *everything* vanishes. Every single channel goes blank.

Any idea why this is happening, and how I can stop it from happening? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks much.

I suspect that you have the ticbox set for "Select all adudio in project, if none selected" - accessed via Edit > Preferences > Interface

If so then uncheck this selection.

Aha! Right you are. I can see how that's a really useful ticbox for using Export - I wonder if, in a future release, there could be some exception to the Delete key?

In any case, thanks much for your help. That was driving me insane.

<<<I wonder if, in a future release, there could be some exception to the Delete key?>>>

We've been fighting forever to get that feature. In the old versions of Audacity, if you didn't select anything, all the effects keys would drop dead. The forum is littered with: "Why are all the effects grayed out?" The answer is you didn't select any audio. Most people naturally assume that if you do select a tool, that it affects the whole show--but you can turn that off.

In any event, UNDO brought it all back, right?
