"Shutting Down" a computer is something of a fairy tale. Major parts of the computer simply don't go off. If you have a large deskside machine, you can shut down and then crawl behind and see all the network services lights still blinking away. If you could see inside the cabinet, some machines have lights inside that never go off--until you pull the plug.
