Not with Audacity you can't. Real time processing is one of the most commly requested Feature Requests on the Wiki ....

Do you mean that you want to record the ION TT with one program, and at the same time you want to edit a different audio file with Audacity?
If so, then yes it is theoretically possible, but you should not be surprised if one of them messes up - most likely the recording.
Editing and recording audio are both CPU intensive and there is a very high probability that the USB interface could loose sync resulting in drop-outs or noise in the recording. If you have the time, try it.
No problem if you use 2 computers.

Or in fact probably not even a problem on one computer, if you use another application to record, and edit in Audacity with its playback device set to the sound card. If you record in one Audacity window and edit in another Audacity window, playback to the sound card won't work, even if you are recording to another device.
Musicislife007 also asked at our feedback address and for reference, here was my take on it:
"Generally you can edit in one project window while recording in another
(use File > New to open a new window). But we don't recommend it,
as it can lead to crashes or drop-outs in the recording, and you can't
play the project you are editing while you are recording in the other
window (even if the playback device in Audio I/O Preferences is
different).
Really the best answer is to record into another application, and use
Audacity for editing (with the playback and recording devices set to
your sound card). The Ion is not tied into having to record with
Audacity.
On Windows, you can run one instance of the current Audacity stable and
one of the current Audacity Beta, if you change the temporary directory
of the one version to be different from the other. Do this by going to
the Directories tab of Preferences, and exit Audacity after the change.
Then launch the Beta, and right-click over the stable audacity.exe and
"run as" and choose the user (it can be the same user). You will be warned
you should not do this but you are allowed to go ahead. If you just launch
the stable .exe you will get a similar warning, but no ability to start the
program, because doing so is prevented by a lock. You may see various
error messages, but they don't seem to affect proper saving of the
project.
I don't know if the above scenario can be made to work on other
operating systems.
The lock on multiple instances does not exist in the legacy Audacity
1.1.x unstable, so you could record into 1.1.x, and then edit other
projects in 1.3.x. This should work on all operating systems I would
guess, if the Beta has a different temporary directory and uses a
different sound device. To avoid issues opening 1.1.x projects in 1.3.x,
export the recording as WAV or AIFFF. 1.1.0 is here:
https://sourceforge.net/project/showfil ... e_id=93708
Note that none of this is supported, and you take the consequences!"

Interesting to read your take on it Gale.
Regarding other operating systems, the only time I've had a major crash on my Linux machine was when running two instances of Audacity - could have been coincidence, but I'm not tempted to try it again. On the other hand, I can run Audacity in Linux and another instance (any Windows version) in WINE. Neither instance has any idea that the other is running, so they are both happy.
My main concern was with the turntable USB interface - we see so many instability problems with them that I would not want to recommend anything that could make it less stable. We seem to agree that it may work, but there are cautions to consider.

Thanks, Steve. We know that recording in Audacity is not internally threadsafe, and that there are stability issues running multiple copies of Audacity, so the general recommendation remains, don't edit in Audacity while recording into it - even in another instance of it.
I've never personally had problems recording a USB turntable into another app. and editing in Audacity on the main sound card, on Windows XP machines with down to 512 MB RAM/1.2 GHZ. I think a lot of the issues with USB turntables are down to the poor quality of the cables and that people insist on plugging them into USB hubs.
