1st stereo track recorded (duped) onto new 2nd track

Hi. Here's my steps. I've searched for a couple days and can't find an answer to this.

1. I'm using Audacity 1.3.5. as I've recently switched from an 8-track Tascam 788 DAW.
2. I use an Acer Extensa laptop w/ Vista Premium (3G Ram; 200G HD); record into my Mackie mixer - out to laptops' Line in; monitoring via laptops' Headphone out.
3. In the Audacity Preferences I've set the following:
-Checked the box "Play other tracks while recording new one".
-Unchecked the box "Software Playthrough: Play new track while recording it".

4. I record a stereo track of rhythm guitar and drum machine - playback is fine (tracks 1 & 2).
5. I then record another stereo track of solo guitar (tracks 3 & 4) while playing along to the rhythm gtr and drums.
6. Here's the PROBLEM: after recording the solo gtr I then playback all 4 tracks. The rhythm gtr and drums (1/2) start playing, but then I also hear the rhythm gtr and drums recorded (duped) onto the solo gtr track (3/4).
7. I notice it because of the track offset between tracks 1/2 and 3/4 ... and will fix it by adjusting latency or track alignment - right?.

What am I doing wrong? This can't be right, otherwise I wouldn't be able to "solo" out any track for review?

Scott

You have probably got your computer sound system set to record "Stereo Mix" rather than set to record "Line In".
Look in your sound cards control panel/mixer to change the source of the recording.

If you get stuck, look in the Audacity wiki (link at top of page) for "Vista", and then for "Mixer Toolbar Issues". Both of these searches should bring up some relevant help. (i don't use Vista myself, so there's not a lot I can say).

Hmmm. :?:

I'm fairly sure I have it set to "Line-in" as I remember there's an icon of a cord with "Line-in" and a check next to it (Realtek audio drivers). I'm at work and can't verify. This wouldn't be the first time with a PC dialog/setup panel where the answer is reversed. I'll investigate and hopefully the Wiki pages will have something in there that I haven't found in the forum to date.

Thank you :D
