Delay before being able to record

When I want to record something with Audacity, I push the Record-button and it doesn't do anything.
The small vertical line that says where it will start recording will just flicker really fast and when you're lucky it will start recording in a minute. You have to keep looking at it to record something, really irritating.
Anyone an idea?

You probably just don't have enough computer resources. If you are recording from a USB device, plug it in its own port, not into a hub. Reboot more often and read these tips:

If you are recording with the computer's inbuilt sound device, consider updating its drivers too:

Although it is a possibility, it seems a bit unrealistic to me.
I have a entirely new computer and it is a really good one. I never had this kind of problem and it seems a bit weird that I can't record 4 seconds of text but can play Crysis on Very High while making stuff with Photoshop CS4....

Sound card drivers would be high on my list of what the problem might be.
