TKs Taskbar Freeze Fix

Post by torikamal » Sat Sep 20, 2008 3:01 am

This fix will work hopefully for anybody who has experienced the weird freeze where Audacity is running fine for a while, then it just stops working and whenever you load it, it just hangs in the taskbar, but never loads the gui.
I currently run Windows XP and had installed the VST-Bridge-1.1 as well as the LADSPA_plugins-win-0.4.15 plugin pack.

I tried uninstalling, rebooting, deleting every registry mention of audacity and VST-Bridge-1.1. Nothing worked. I tore all my hair out and left it in a pile next to my Care Bears. Then it occurred to me--it doesn't actually crash and it doesn't actually hang--it behaves as though it is running like normal (Audacity, not my hair). So here's what I did and here's how I fixed it--

ctrl-alt-del
right-click on Audacity and select maximize.

And, it's back. I opened and saved a file before I closed it just to be safe, and now it works every time. I hope this helps you guys.

Thank you for sharing your fix TK.
The other fix that has been reported by several users is to reset the Audacity preferences as described here: http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... references

That fix seems simpler.

Here's one other thing that I've found, too. Instead of maximizing from the taskmanager, if you just

right-click on the taskbar tap, you can then just
left-click on maximize from there, too.

Ah, I think I figured out what the deal is:

If you double-click on the top of window bar, it will minimize it (mac style). However, you can't maximize the window by double-clicking on the taskbar or alt-tabbing or anything else, you have to right-click and maximize. That could be all I was experiencing (and others).

Yes, sometimes it just gets stuck minimized. It's not an issue we have seen much of recently, so it seems that the current release (1.3.5) is less prone to this. I think it occurs when the Audacity launch icon is over clicked, causing Audacity to try and open two instances at the same time (it doesn't like that - generally it is best to only run one instance of Audacity at a time). Nevertheless it is annoying if it does get stuck and you don't know how to get out of it.

For anyone who has this problem, maximizing Audacity from the Task Manager would be a good and quick fix , so would be worth trying first, but if that fails, trashing the config file seems to do the trick. :D

Where are you double-clicking to minimise? Double-clicking the Title bar (where it says "Audacity" at the top) would normally maximise/restore the window on XP. By default, anyway, I think...

Another way of avoiding the issue might be to task switch with ALT-TAB then the application window never gets minimised.
