Metatags

This is going to be my first post in this forum.

When exporting audio from Audacity there is this metatag dialog box and I fill in artist name, track title, album title etc. It is nice when doing this on an mp3 but it seems that it is not used anywhere if it is a wav file. Not in Windows Media Player or iTunes nor on the CDs I burn.

Question is when and where the metatags on a wav file are used?

Another question is, if I put a commercial CD in my computer and all the above information is displayed, is it ONLY because it was retrieved from the internet?

Few programs other than Audacity support metadata in WAV files, so there's probably not much point filling it in.

With a standard CD, yes that is correct, though there is an extension to the standard format that is occasionally used that is called "CD text". Note that" CD text" is not a part of the official (red book) standard but you may come across it occasionally. CD text allows track information to be stored on the CD.
