Lag time

Post by mike gardner » Thu Feb 16, 2012 10:34 pm

I have connected a guitar to the micrphone input (front) of my laptop.
when i hit a note it has a lag time of approx 1sec. before I hear it in the speakers.
however the the input levels show that the note is being played in real time. only the sound lags about a second.
Please help! Mike

Windows 7 machines are fairly unlikely to offer hardware playthrough of the inputs. Have you unmuted in the correct place, "Playback" tab of Sound, right-click over speakers > Properties, then "Levels" tab, then unmute the fromt mic? I have slider and mute for playback inputs on my Windows 7 desktop but they do not work, almost certainly because the sound device drivers disable them.

Have you turned off Transport > Software Playthrough in Audacity? If you have hardware playthrough you don't need software playthrough.

Do you need to monitor the guitar? For guitar recording it is often sufficient to hear the guitar acoustically.
