Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Cannot record

Post by tg22686 » Sun Feb 05, 2012 7:43 pm

Hello, I have a new Lenovo Thinkpad T520 Windows 7 laptop with a Conexant Audio card. I cannot record streaming audio on this laptop. I have several work associates that cannot record with Audacity on Thinkpads with Windows 7 unless they use a cable from stereo out to mic in. Read through some help items in Audacity and it mentions having to use a cable, but the audio quality is compromised. My work associates also mention that the sound is not as good.

Any suggestion or help with a work around on this?

I had a IBM Thinkpad T61 Windows XP and had no issue with recording. Enjoyed many years of Audacity use on this.

Thanks,

TG

the audio quality is compromised.
That's polite. It should be awful. That connection is an enormous mismatch.

That trick, mentioned in several publications including this one doesn't say that. It says to plug the Stereo Line-Out into the Stereo Line-In. It doesn't say anything about Mono Mic-In other than not to use it.

Windows laptops may have a number of pieces missing, like the Blue Stereo Line-In connection and the Wave-Out device which is needed to record internet audio.

Got the Behringer UFO202. Hooked up and only record a high pitch rough tone. Have 3.5mm cable going out of laptop to RCA jacks that are on the input side of UFO202 device. Streaming audio is fine with headphones plugged into UFO202. Mic is all the way up, but only the high pitch tone is recording. Any suggestion?

Tried unit with a CD player and Audacity records fine.

Thanks!

Ensure that "Software Playthrough" is not enabled (Transport menu).

You hear it on what "audio" (other than the headphones connected to the Behringer UFO202)?
The only audio that you should be hearing is from the headphones. Where is this other "audio" coming from?

the audio referenced was just the music from audio out of the Behringer unit. There is a high pitch hum heard here that is was also recorded.

Today I tried a different hookup on the laptop. I connected the 3.5mm male plug to audio out at the docking station (versus the 3.5mm 4-pin audio out mic in). Success!! Clear audio recording!

Thanks for all of the support on this forum.

Well, the high pitch hum while streaming audio never went away. Still present when recording and monitoring microphone. Audio recording from external devices do not have this hum, only when audio input is from laptop audio out (redording streaming audio). I have tried cutting off internal mic on laptop and this was not successful.

Some comments:
While using the UFO202, I connected a ground from the phono ground port to the laptop (a ground location). When this was done the hum almost went away completely. Some small noise is seen while monitoring meters in audacity. So I thought it was related to the UFO202 unit and ordered a UCA202 (no phono connect). This unit has the same result with the high pitch hum.

Any ideas or thoughts how to get rid of the high pitch hum?

Thanks,

T

Try unplugging the power supply from the laptop and running on batteries.

I tried without power cord (on batteries) and still have the feedback (high pitch hum). I tried on the docking station that has an audio out 3 pin connection (then to the Behringer UCA202). This also has the feedback high pitch hum. So still at a loss for recording streaming audio.

Thanks,

T
